Selection of the Recipient
The Edward Goodrich Acheson Award Committee shall be the Honors and Awards Committee.

Nominations for the Award shall be solicited by the Chairman of the Honors and Awards Committee by an announcement in a Society publication distributed to all members and in letters to the officers of the Society and to the Chairmen of the Divisions and Sections in the twelfth month prior to the meeting at which the award is scheduled to be given. Nominations shall be considered closed at the start of the spring meeting of the Society in the year of the normally scheduled presentation of the Award, but nominations, once made, shall be considered in effect for two consecutive award periods. Nominations shall be accompanied by suitable supporting materials and shall be provided in their entirety to the Chairman of the Honors and Awards Committee in ten copies.

Members of the Committee are ineligible to be considered for the award, but should any member be nominated for the award, his candidacy shall take effect at the expiration of the term of his membership on the Committee.

The nominees for Award recipient shall be considered by the Honors and Awards Committee at its meeting prior to the meeting of the Board of Directors at the spring meeting of the Society in the year of the normally scheduled presentation of the award. The Committee shall, by the affirmative votes of at least five of its members, determine whether the list of nominees includes any suitably qualified candidates for the Award and from those so qualified shall, also by the affirmative votes of at least five of its members, recommend one candidate as the Award recipient. This recommendation will be transmitted to the subsequent meeting of the Board of Directors for approval. If the Award Subcommittee has determined that no suitably qualified candidate has been nominated or if a majority of the Honors and Awards Committee does not approve the recommendation, the Board of Directors shall be so informed. If no recommendation is made by the Honors and Awards Committee or the Board of Directors does not approve their recommendation, the Award for the period under consideration shall not be granted.

On approval of the recommendation for the granting of the Award by the Board of Directors, the President of the Society shall inform the intended recipient of this action and shall determine whether the requirements governing acceptance of the Award will be met. If exception to the requirements are desired, the President shall request their approval from the Board. If a request for exceptions to the requirements governing acceptance is not approved by the Board, the Award for the period under consideration shall not be granted.

On agreement by the intended recipient with the requirements governing acceptance or approval of exception to them by the Board, the recipient of the Award shall be considered determined. This shall be announced in a Society publication distributed to all members at the earliest opportunity and given appropriate publicity elsewhere.
