Sherlock Swann, Jr.

Sherlock Swann, Jr.

Sherlock Swann, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 30, 1900. He received his B.S. degree from Princeton University in 1922, and his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1926.

He became a member of the Division of Chemical Engineering, Experiment Station, University of Illinois, in 1927. He became Research Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1941. His principal field of research was in electro-organic Chemistry.

Dr. Swann became a member of The Electrochemical Society in 1928. He was a Manager from 1934 to 1940, Vice-President from 1941 to 1943, and a Manager again from 1943 to 1946. In addition, he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Electro-Organic Division, 1940-42; Vice-Chairman 1942-44; and Chairman 1944-46. He also served of many standing committees of the Society. Dr. Swann was elected President of the Society in 1958. Unfortunately, he was ill during most of his term of President. He was made an Honorary Member of the Society in 1974.
