Student travel grants

The Industrial Electrochemistry & Electrochemical Engineering (IE&EE) Division encourages participation of the next generation of researchers by offering travel support to one or more graduate or upper level undergraduate students to present at biannual meetings.

Eligibility requirements & terms:
  • Applicants must be graduate students or upper level undergraduate students at the time of the conference presentation.
  • Student applicants are eligible who will be presenting in an oral or poster symposia sponsored or co-sponsored by the IE&EE Division, with preference given to oral presentations.
  • Travel award support includes up to $500 towards travel and lodging and a conference registration waiver.
  • Awardees must present at the conference to receive their travel award support.
  • Awards will be made based upon the candidate’s academic record, significance and quality of the abstract submitted, record of achievements, and strength of the letter of support from the candidate’s faculty advisor.
  • Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for the division student travel awards.
The application for the grant must include:
  • A copy of the abstract submitted for the conference with the symposium or poster session identified.
  • Academic transcripts for all graduate work (if candidate is an undergraduate or is less than two years into graduate work, then undergraduate transcripts should also be provided).
  • CV (2 pages) including education, expected date of degree completion, publications, patents or patent applications, conference presentations, and any leadership activities.
  • Letter of support from the candidate’s faculty advisor. (Letters simply confirming a student’s enrollment in the program will not be sufficient).

Theodore Beck Student Travel Award

Sponsored by the estate of Theodore R. Beck, ECS Past President (1975-1976) and Founder of The Electrochemical Technology Corp., this enhanced travel award provides each student recipient up to $2,000 to cover most costs to attend an ECS biannual meeting (i.e., registration and travel expenses). To be eligible, award recipients are required to present at an IE&EE division-sponsored or co-sponsored session.

The Theodore Beck Student Travel Award is available for ECS biannual meetings taking place from 2022 through 2027.


Young professional & early career travel grants

The Industrial Electrochemistry & Electrochemical Engineering (IE&EE) Division recognizes the need and wishes to encourage and support young professionals in attending ECS biannual meetings in hopes of fostering long-term involvement of these young professionals in ECS and the division.

To support these efforts the IE&EE Division will:
  • Generally support one early career professional (postdoctoral fellows, assistant professors or members of industry who received their PhD less than 5 years prior to the date of the start of the meeting) per meeting, should there be a qualified applicant.
  • Support will be up to $500 towards conference attendance expenses.
Eligibility requirements & terms:
  • The awardee must give an oral presentation at the conference in a symposia sponsored or co-sponsored by the division.
  • The awardee is requested to attend the division’s executive committee meeting to introduce themselves to the division.
The application for the grant must include:
  • CV (2-3 pages)
  • A copy of the abstract with the symposium to which it has been submitted identified.
  • One page letter from the applicant discussing their interest in industrial electrochemistry and/or electrochemical engineering.
  • Letter of support from their supervisor.
