Abstracts must be received by November 15, 2005, to be considered for inclusion in this conference.

This TMS sponsored and SME co-sponsored symposium will honor the very distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Prof. H.Y. Sohn.

This symposium is organized to discuss recent development in thermo- physico- chemical- fundamentals involved in:

  • The advanced processing of metals and materials, and their industrial applications
  • New or improved technologies related to extracting and processing
  • Today's industrial practice in metals and materials processing.

These are the subjects of the lifetime work of Professor Sohn in whose honor the symposium is named.

Prof. Sohn is renowned for his impact in various fields such as non-ferrous, ferrous and nano-scale materials processing; various processing routes in pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, chemical vapor synthesis and processing, recycling, etc. and various investigation techniques such as experimental measurements and physical modeling and simulation (CFD etc.). His 300+ publications have dealt with a variety of topics in the above mentioned fields.

This meeting also incorporates the 4th International Symposium on Sulfide Smelting 2006, which will be an integral but distinctive part of this symposium since Prof. Sohn initiated it about 20 years ago.

Industrial practice will also constitute an important and central part of the symposium.

The papers will be published in separate proceedings, which will be available at the symposium and will include an article honoring the lifetime achievements of Prof. Sohn. Industrial companies will also be able to advertise themselves by sponsoring the symposium through small fees/donations.
