Symposium I03: Frontiers of Chemical/Molecular Engineering in Electrochemical Energy Technologies: In Honor of Robert Savinell’s 70th Birthday

Symposium focus: In honor of Robert Savinell’s 70th birthday, after more than four decades of research in fuel cells and flow batteries, this symposium is organized to celebrate his achievements. The symposium highlights current and emerging ideas in electrocatalysis, electrolytes, and device design for fuel cells and flow batteries. Topics include molecular-level understanding of small-molecule electrocatalysis (including hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon- and nitrogen-containing molecules such as alcohols, ammonia, urea, carbon dioxide, and others), membranes and electrolytes including additives, nanoparticles, and deep eutectic chemistries, redox-active molecules, and new concepts in fuel cells and flow batteries, with contributions spanning different length scales from molecules to devices. We welcome contributions from both theory and experiment, especially on studies that are designed to bridge molecular-level understanding of electrochemistry to macroscopic electrochemical technologies. The objective is to provide an interdisciplinary discussion forum on the current state and future perspectives in fuel cells and flow batteries, and to celebrate the achievements of Robert Savinell to the field. Since 1902, ECS’s flagship journal—the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) originally published as Transactions of The Electrochemical Society—has published some of the best and most innovative research in the field of electrochemical science and technology.

With a historical tradition of scientific excellence and commitment to the pursuit and open exchange of scientific knowledge, JES has accumulated papers through the years that have long-lasting merit. In an effort to preserve the voices of distinguished scientists and engineers who have helped shape our world, the Society implemented the ECS Digital Library Leadership Collection.

Robert Savinell, professor at Case Western Reserve University, is one of the newest faces to conserve this highly significant research. Through a generous gift to the ECS Digital Library, The Robert F. Savinell Collection has been established and the Society has taken yet another step toward its commitment to open access publishing.

Preserving the science of the past

“Most of the papers that get published in the ECS journals have long-lasting value,” says Savinell, editor of JES. “They’re more than just recent news blurbs that introduce a new idea that in a few years will fade away.”

Through a strong editorial and peer-review process, the papers published in JES are not only topically relevant when they are published, but also carry a fundamental insight that applies more broadly than their specific application.

“I think there’s a lot of value in that kind of information that’s being archived forever,” Savinell says.

Beyond the preservation of these timeless voices, Savinell’s gift to the leadership collection supports ECS’s commitment to open access publishing—something Savinell sees as the ultimate future of scholarly publications.

ECS Arizona Section Meets

The Arizona Section welcomed members of the Valley of the Sun (Central Arizona) student chapter. ECS has a number of student chapters, which provide a venue to learn more about electrochemical and solid-state sciences.

The winter/spring meeting of the Arizona Section of ECS was held on January 26, 2015 at the University of Arizona. A total of twenty faculty and students from the University of Arizona and Arizona State University attended the meeting.

After a brief networking reception, Professor Srini Raghavan, Vice-Chair of the Arizona Section, introduced the guest speaker of the evening, Dr. Robert Savinell, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. Following a brief description of the activities of ECS, Dr. Savinell gave a very informative talk: Iron-Based Flow Batteries for Grid-Scale Energy Storage.

George S. Dively Professor of Electrochemical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University
Professor Savinell is recognized as a leading authority on electrochemical energy storage and conversion. His research has been directed at fundamental science and engineering research for electrochemical systems and novel device design, development, and optimization. Dr. Savinell has over 100 publications and seven patents in the electrochemical field. He is a past chair of ECS’s Electrolytic and Electrochemical Engineering Division, a former editor of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society, and a Fellow of ECS.
