Pennington, NJ – The Electrochemical Society (ECS) is proud to congratulate the 2021 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering winners, Isamu Akasaki, Shuji Nakamura, Nick Holonyak, Jr., M. George Craford, and Russell Dupuis. The 2021 prize acknowledges their contributions from the initial creation and development of LED lighting its applications. The global impact of ubiquitous LED and solid state lighting has contributed tremendously to reducing energy consumption and addressing climate change. Akasaki, Nakamura, Holonyak, Jr., Craford, and Dupuis have interacted with The Electrochemical Society (ECS) throughout their careers, publishing much of their critical research in Society journals. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) Board of Directors and International Meeting on Chemical Sensors (IMCS) Organizing Committee announce that their upcoming meetings have moved to a digital platform and will not take place in Chicago, IL. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is not possible to host an in person meeting without risking the health and safety of meeting attendees and volunteers, ECS staff, and the public at large.
The 239th ECS and 18th IMCS meetings will be held as scheduled as fully digital events. Rather than travelling to Chicago, all presenting authors are requested to submit digital presentation files (video, and/or slide deck or poster) in advance of the meeting. These materials will be freely available to all global attendees for on-demand viewing throughout the meeting dates. (more…)

Specialty chemicals, such as atomic layer deposition (ALD) precursors for the manufacture of thin films, are considered hazardous materials (hazmat) and therefore require special care and preparation for transportation. Leads efforts to ensure the effective acquisition of the most important research in our field and the broadest possible dissemination of this technical content; works with executive staff and volunteer leaders to curate ECS’s portfolio to ensure titles reflect the evolving technical and publishing needs of the community, and serves as the senior relationship manager for ECS’s publication-related committees and volunteers. On November 11, 2020, Jie Xiao, Laboratory Fellow and Group Leader of the Battery Materials & System Group, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Arkansas Research Alliance Scholar & Associate Professor, Inorganic Chemistry, University of Arkansas, presented “Electrochemistry in Rechargeable Lithium Metal Batteries” via a live webinar presentation hosted by The Electrochemical Society.
Xiao’s talk covered the electrochemistry underlying Li metal dendrite growth; pouch cell level understanding of Li dendrites and their implications in cell performance; and bridged the scientific gap between academic research and industry needs.

The Chemical Sciences Roundtable is hosting a workshop exploring laboratory automation which can provide chemists and other scientists with the ability to create libraries of new compounds efficiently in unprecedented time. The promise of laboratory automation is much more realistic today with recent advances in various technologies than in years past. As technology improves, however, one must consider how best to automate the laboratory and train next-generation chemists, chemical engineers, materials and formulation scientists, and others. With the completion of the year-long project to implement Single Sign On (SSO), the electrochemical and solid state community can now log in to the ECS website with just one set of credentials, and have access to all ECS-approved applications and websites without having to having to log in again. SSO simplifies username and password management while improving identity protection, decreasing “password fatigue.”
When we started on our COVID-19 interview series, no one knew how long the pandemic would last or the long-term impact it would have on our community. As we approach the end of a year of living in the shadow of COVID-19, we thought it useful to follow up with some of our interviewees. We learned that research, collaboration, teaching, and learning are continuing to evolve—along with the challenges of distance learning, meeting, and life.
When we spoke with Mark Orazem last spring about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was on a sabbatical that did not turn out as planned. Now he is back teaching at the University of Florida where he is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. (more…)
