ECS Honors and Awards Upcoming Deadlines

The ECS Honors & Awards Program provides many opportunities to honor the outstanding achievements and contributions to electrochemistry and solid state science made by ECS members at every level, and recognize exceptional service to the Society. In addition, each year ECS provides for, and facilitates the use of, thousands of dollars in fellowships and biannual meeting travel grants to support students’ and early career researchers’ efforts to advance electrochemistry and solid state science.

Please note these upcoming deadlines and submit applications and nominations as soon as possible!

Society Awards

Fellow of The Electrochemical Society
Advanced individual technological contributions in the field of electrochemical and solid state science and technology, and active ECS membership, are recognized by the Fellow designation. The award consists of a framed certificate and ECS Fellow lapel pin.
Nomination deadline: February 1, 2022


Fellowships and Travel Grants

ECS Summer Fellowships
The ECS Summer Fellowship supports student members during the months of June through September pursuing research in a field of interest to the Society. Each year, up to four are awarded: the Edward G. Weston, Joseph W. Richards, F. M. Becket, and the H. H. Uhlig Fellowships. Each consists of US $5,000 to support the recipient’s research, and publication in the award year of a summary report in the Interface winter issue.
Application deadline: January 15, 2022

Colin Garfield Fink Summer Fellowship
The Colin Garfield Fink Summer Fellowship assists a postdoctoral scientist/researcher during the months of June through September pursue research in a field of interest to the Society. The award consists of US $5,000 in funding and publication within the award year of a summary report in the Interface winter issue.
Application deadline: January 15, 2022

ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship
A partnership with the Toyota Research Institute of North America, the ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship encourages young professionals and scholars to pursue research in batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen, and future sustainable technologies. The award consists of a restricted grant of no less than US $50,000 to conduct the research outlined in the proposal within one year, and a complimentary one-year ECS membership.
Application deadline: January 31, 2022

241st ECS Meeting Biannual Meeting Travel Grant  
ECS divisions and sections award Biannual Meeting Travel Grants to undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and young professionals and faculty presenting papers at Society biannual meetings—in this case, the 241st ECS Meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada, from May 29 – June 2, 2022. The awards consist of financial support ranging from complimentary meeting registrations to luncheon/reception tickets, travel support, and more. Each division and section has its own application requirements.
Application deadline: February 28, 2022


Division Awards

High-Temperature Energy, Materials, & Processes Division Outstanding Achievement Award
The H-TEMP Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes excellence in research and outstanding technical contributions to the high-temperature energy, materials, and processes field. The award includes a framed certificate; US $1,000 prize; and complimentary registration.
Nomination deadline: January 1, 2022

High-Temperature Energy, Materials, & Processes Division J. B. Wagner, Jr. Young Investigator Award
The Wagner Award recognizes a young Society member demonstrating exceptional promise for a successful career in science and/or technology in the field of high-temperature energy, materials, and processes. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $1,000; travel expenses; and complimentary meeting registration. 
Nomination deadline: December 15, 2021

LDMLuminescence and Display Materials Division Outstanding Achievement Award
The LDM Outstanding Achievement Award encourages excellence in luminescence and display materials research, and outstanding technical contributions to the field. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $1,000 prize; and travel assistance to facilitate meeting attendance.

Sensor Division Early Career Award
The award recognizes promising early career engineers’ and scientists’ research contributions to the field of sensors, and encourages recipients to continue careers in the field and remain active in the ECS Sensor Division. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $500; complimentary meeting registration; and Sensor Division Business Luncheon ticket.

Sensor Division Outstanding Achievement Award
This Sensor Division award recognizes outstanding achievement in service to the sensor community and research and/or technical contributions to the field of sensors, and encourages work excellence in the field. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $1,000; complimentary meeting registration; and Sensor Division Business Luncheon ticket.

Battery Division Early Career Award Sponsored by Neware Technology Limited
The Battery Division award recognizes and supports the development of talent and future leaders among early career professionals in battery and fuel cell science and technology. It consists of a framed certificate; US $2,000; complimentary meeting registration; and up to US $2,000 in travel expenses.
Nomination deadline: March 15, 2022.

Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award Sponsored by MTI Corporation and the Jiang Family Foundation 
The development of talent and future leaders in battery and fuel cell science and technology among postdoctoral researchers affiliated with the Battery Division is recognized and supported by this award. It consists of a framed certificate; US $2,000; and complimentary meeting registration.
Nomination deadline: March 15, 2022   

Battery Division Research Award
The Battery Division Research Award, which encourages excellence in battery and fuel cell research and publication in ECS journals, seeks to develop interest in battery and fuel cell science among younger electrochemists. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $2,000; and Battery Division membership for as long as the recipient maintains Society membership.
Nomination deadline: March 15, 2022   

Battery Division Student Research Award Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Research & Development
This award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in the field of electrochemical power sources, and encourages recipients to initiate or continue careers in the field. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $1,000; complimentary student meeting registration; and travel expenses up to US $1,000.
Nomination deadline: March 15, 2022

Battery Division Technology Award
The Battery Division Technology Award encourages the development of battery and fuel cell technology, and recognizes significant achievements in this area. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $2,000; and Battery Division membership for as long as the recipient maintains Society membership.

Volta MedalSection Awards

Europe Section Alessandro Volta Medal
The Volta Medal recognizes excellence in electrochemistry and solid state science and technology research in Europe. The award consists of a silver medal and US $2,000.

San Francisco Section Award
The San Francisco Section Award recognizes excellence in the field of electrochemical science and technology and/or solid state science and technology, and acknowledges service to The Electrochemical Society in the southwest United States. The award consists of an engraved plaque and US $2,000.

Student Awards

San Francisco Section Daniel Cubicciotti Award
This award, which assists a deserving student in Northern California pursue a career in the physical sciences or engineering, consists of an etched metal plaque and US $2,000. Two honorable mentions, each consisting of a framed certificate and US $500, are also presented.

Canada Section Student Award
The Canada Section Student Award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in Canada in the field of electrochemical power sources, and encourages recipients to initiate or continue careers in the field. The award consists of a US $1,500 prize.

Pacific Northwest Section Electrochemistry Student Award
This award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho pursuing a PhD in the field of electrochemical engineering and applied electrochemistry, and encourages recipients to continue careers in electrochemical engineering or applied electrochemistry. The award consists of a US $1,000 prize.
Nomination deadline: February 28, 2022

Sensor Division Student Research Award
This Sensor Division award recognizes promising students for conducting outstanding research in the field of sensors during their graduate training; and encourages recipients to continue careers in the field and remain active in the ECS Sensor Division. The award consists of a framed certificate; US $200; complimentary meeting registration; and Sensor Division Business Luncheon ticket.
Nomination deadline: March 1, 2022

Battery Division Student Research Award Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Research & Development
