Recognizing the University of South Carolina

ECS would like to formally commend the University of South Carolina for being presented the Outstanding Student Chapter Award this year at PRiME 2016! The chapter has proven an incredible asset to the organization, and it was an honor to recognize its prodigious achievements.

The Outstanding Student Chapter Award was established in 2012 to recognize distinguished student chapters that demonstrate active participation in The Electrochemical Society’s technical activities, establish community and outreach activities in the areas of electrochemical and solid state science and engineering education, and create and maintain a robust membership base.

The award consisted of a recognition plaque, $1,000 toward student chapter funding, and chapter recognition in Interface.

Recently, Emir Dogdibegovic, who served as University of South Carolina’s Student Chapter President from 2013-2015, provided some insight into the student chapter’s growth and success.

According to Dogdibegovic, since the formation of the chapter, the members’ electrochemical research has been vibrant and rewarding. The research, currently led by 14 professors and over 30 graduate and undergraduate students, covers a wide range of areas including fuel cells, batteries, dielectrics, corrosion, and photoelectrochemical cells.

He explained that in the past few years, the chapter grew substantially, largely thanks to frequent student chapter activities and many influential guest speakers.

These prestigious speakers were some of the most renowned of their respected fields. They included Dr. Mei Cai, Dr. Thomas Fuller, Dr. Kevin Huang, Dr. Ralph E. White, Dr. Anil Virkar, Dr. Shi-Gang Sun, and Dr. Subhash C. Singhal.

Dogdibegovic also shared that the chapter was able to expand its outreach through electrochemistry and science projects in local high schools during “engineering weeks,” recruiting activities at USC College of Engineering, and volunteering at ECS meetings.

Even more impressively, in just the past few years, the chapter was decorated with over 25 student presentations and journal publications reflecting profound passions for electrochemistry.

In closing, Dogdibegovic revealed the secret to his chapter’s success:

“The chapter is highly dedicated to the mission of ECS and continuously encourages interest in electrochemistry and seeks new student members by organizing student meetings and presentations before ECS spring and fall meetings.” – Emir Dogdibegovic, Former Student Chapter President
