Call for Papers

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a special collection of papers being presented at the International Conference on Advanced Materials and Mechanical Characterization (ICAMMC-2021). The meeting takes place December 2-4, 2021 in virtual format. 

ICAMMC 2021 covers a wide range of emerging inter- and multi-disciplinary topics in developing advanced materials and their characterization at multiple length scales, manufacturing, and growth of innovative materials. It is an international forum for sharing knowledge and results in theory, computation, synthesis, fabrication, and characterization of advanced materials in structural, microstructural, small-scale mechanical aspects (not limited to), structure-property correlations, and technological applications. It is a common platform to present and discuss path-breaking research ideas and is expected to be an interface between academia and industry for societal needs. This focus issue centers on the advancements in design/fabrication, characterization and properties of next-generation materials for energy, electronic and dielectric applications. (more…)

Congratulations to Chibueze Amanchukwu; Christopher Arges; Marm Dixit; Marta Hatzell; and Siddharth Komini Babu; the winners of the 2021-2022 ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship for Projects in Green Energy Technology. ECS and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRI-NA), a division of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA), chose the five recipients who are pursuing innovative electrochemical research in green energy technology. Through this fellowship, ECS and Toyota encourage young professionals and scholars to pursue battery and fuel cell research, and hope to see further innovative and unconventional technologies born from electrochemical research.

“Synthesis of novel perfluoroether polymer electrolytes for energy-dense solid-state lithium metal batteries”

Chibueze Amanchukwu is Neubauer Family Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2017), with Paula Hammond as advisor. Amanchukwu pursued postdoctorate study at Stanford University with Zhenan Bao (2017-2019) and the University of Cambridge with Clare Grey (2019). His research on electrolyte design for next generation lithium batteries has been recognized by awards including the 2021 3M Nontenured Faculty Award; 2017-2019 Stanford University TomKat Center Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainable Energy and California Alliance Postdoctoral Fellowship; 2014-2017 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship; 2014 MIT-Imperial College London Global Fellowship; 2012 Texas A&M ChemE Outstanding Graduating Student Award; and 2011 Texas A&M Craig Brown Outstanding Senior Engineer Award. He has published 19 articles with an h-index of 14 and filed one patent. Amanchukwu serves on the Community Board of Materials Horizon. (more…)

The publishing staff of The Electrochemical Society Interface is pleased to announce that with the addition to the ECS Digital Library of the four 1993 ECS Interface issues, plus the first Interface issue (winter 1992), more than 29 years of the ECS community’s history can be seen through the lens of Interface. The digitization of Interface was an 18-month project, focused on ensuring that Interface could be accessible to community members all over the world via a digital medium. (more…)

The ECS Education Committee recently voted to combine the Short Course Subcommittee and Career and Professional Development Subcommittee into one committee: the ECS Continuing Education Subcommittee. The conjoined committee is looking for motivated individuals to help shape the future of continuing education opportunities for the ECS community.

As the fields of electrochemistry and solid state science and related technologies continue to evolve, so do the educational needs of our community. COVID-19 changed education dramatically, forcing a precipitous shift away from the classroom to online learning. While face-to-face education can never be completely replaced, certain aspects of online learning are here to stay.

Be part of the dialog on how the Society maintains its preeminence in continuing education in electrochemistry and solid state science and related technologies—and meets the challenges of an ever-changing education landscape!

Sensor DivisionDeadline: March 1, 2020

The ECS Sensor Division Outstanding Achievement Award was established in 1989 to recognize outstanding achievement in research and/or technical contributions to the field of sensors and to encourage work excellence in the field. The award consists of a framed certificate and a $1,000 prize. The next award winner is recognized at the PRiME 2020, in Honolulu, HI, from October 4-9, 2020.

Joseph Wang received the award in 2018. He is Distinguished Professor, SAIC Endowed Chair and Chair in the Department of Nanoengineering at University of California, San Diego; and director of the UCSD Center of Wearable Sensors. His award talk, “Electrochemical Sensors: From Beakers to the Skin and the Mouth,” was presented at the 2018 PRiME meeting in Hawaii.

Since ECS launched its partnership with IOP Publishing on January 2, 2020, all ECS digital publications are only available through IOPscience. ECS bookmarks will not be rewritten by the server. You must update your URLs (web page addresses) yourself.

2020 ECS Battery Division Awards

Battery DivisionNominations Deadline: March 15

The Electrochemical Society (ECS) Battery Division is accepting nominations for four awards: the Battery Division Research Award, Technology Award, Postdoctoral Associate Research Award, and Student Research Award. The award winners are recognized at PRiME 2020 in Honolulu, Hawaii, from October 4-9, 2020.

Battery Division Research Award: established in 1958 to encourage excellence in battery and fuel cell research, and to encourage publication in ECS journals. The winner receives a framed certificate; a $2,000 prize; and ECS Battery Division membership for as long as the recipient maintains Society membership.
