Submit your manuscripts to the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology (JSS) Focus Issue on Recent Advances in Wide Bandgap III-Nitride Devices and Solid State Lighting: A Tribute to Isamu Akasaki.

About Isamu Akasaki

Isamu Akasaki has devoted much of his research career to the development and advancement of efficient GaN light-emitting diodes via a metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy growth process. This approach led to the discovery of p-type GaN with magnesium doping and ultimately to the invention of the first GaN p-n junction blue/ultraviolet LED in 1989. Subsequent work by Akasaki’s group led to advances in conductivity control of n-type GaN and related alloys by doping with silicon, allowing for the use of hetero structures and quantum wells in the design and fabrication of even more efficient p-n junction structures and the development of wide bandgap III-Nitride semiconductors for solid state lighting and related technologies. These groundbreaking efforts were recognized in 2014 with the Nobel Prize in Physics. (more…)

The Electrochemical Society has some exciting news! ECS has selected IOP Publishing (IOPP) as its journals publishing partner.

Starting in 2020, IOPP will partner with ECS in the publication of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society and the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology and the hosting of ECS Transactions, ECS Meeting Abstracts, and Interface as well as the hosting of the archives for ECS’s retired publications—ECS Electrochemistry Letters, ECS Solid State Letters, Electrochemical and Solid State Letters, and ECS Proceedings Volumes.

Christopher Jannuzzi, executive director and CEO of ECS, said: “ECS has a 117+ year reputation for creating outstanding, peer-reviewed periodicals, conference proceedings, and magazines. We have a long-standing commitment to ensure the technical quality of the works published, as well as the integrity and validity of the peer review our community provides. (more…)

Author Fees to Change in 2019

When ECS launched the Free the Science initiative, the Society made a commitment to constructive, industry-wide disruption based on a simple tenet—research should be free for authors to publish and free for readers to access.

Already the initiative has had momentous impact.

Since ECS began offering open access as a publishing option in 2014, over 35% of its journal articles have been published open access. Over 90% of those articles were published at no cost to authors, thanks to the over $2.1 million in article processing charge credits the Society provided.

ECS Accelerates Web of Science Indexing

ECS is pleased to announce that articles published in its two peer-reviewed journals, the Journal of The Electrochemical Society and the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology, are being indexed in Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science (WoS) faster than ever before—on a rolling, article-by-article basis.

How did it work before? Until recently, WoS indexed ECS journals upon issue close, and it could take about six weeks from the close of an issue for receipt/delivery to WoS. This means if the first article in an issue was published at the beginning of the month, and the last published at the end of the month, the first article could go 10 weeks or more before being indexed in WoS.
