Nianqiang (Nick) Wu holds the Armstrong/Siadat Endowed Chair Professor in Materials Science & Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Wu is recognized for the fundamental understanding of charge transfer and energy transfer processes in sensors, photocatalysts, photoelectrochemical cells, and electrochemical devices, and his role in development of theory, materials, and devices for plasmonic solar energy conversion. His work has advanced the science and technology of biosensors for detection of environmental pollutants and human biomarkers.
Prof. Wu received his PhD in materials science and engineering from Zhejiang University (1997). He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh from 1999 to 2001, and managed Keck Surface Science Center at Northwestern University from 2001-2005. He joined WVU as Assistant Professor in 2005.
A Fellow of The Electrochemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Prof. Wu received the ECS Sensor Division Outstanding Achievement Award and Alice Hamilton Award for Excellence in Occupational Safety & Health: Biological Category. He was named Outstanding Researcher of Year, WVU Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources; Outstanding Researcher Award, WVU College of Engineering and Mineral Resources; and Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics. He is the author or co-author of one book, three book chapters, and some 160 refereed journal articles. Prof. Wu joined ECS in 2000 and is actively involved, serving as Treasurer, Secretary, Vice Chair, and currently as Chair of the ECS Sensor Division, as well as on numerous board and award committees.
