The Electrochemical Society (ECS) Publications Department is saddened to share the death of Dr. John N. Harb, longtime ECS member and former Technical Editor of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES). Dr. Harb passed away on September 13, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Dr. Harb was a valued member of the ECS community from 1999 to 2026 and an ECS Edward G. Weston Summer Fellow in 1985. He served as a Technical Editor of JES from July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2023, bringing to the journal not only his considerable knowledge and expertise in electrochemical engineering, but also a deep commitment to the integrity of the scholarly record.
Those of us in ECS Publications who had the opportunity to work with John knew him as a kind, warm, and dedicated member of our editorial community. He approached his service to the journal thoughtfully and with great care, and his presence and contributions will be deeply missed.
Beyond his service to ECS, Dr. Harb was a longtime professor of chemical engineering at Brigham Young University and, with Thomas F. Fuller, coauthored the 2018 textbook Electrochemical Engineering, which brings together the fundamental principles and broad applications of a field increasingly important to energy, manufacturing, and sustainability.
ECS Publications extends its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Harb’s family, friends, colleagues, students, and the many members of the electrochemical community whose lives and work he influenced.
A more extensive remembrance of Dr. Harb and his contributions to the field and to ECS will be published in a future issue of ECS Interface in collaboration with his home division, the Industrial Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering (IE&EE) Division.
