Symposium F03: Electrochemical Conversion of Biomass 3

Symposium focus: Electrochemical conversion of biomass feedstocks has gained recent interest because of more abundant and lower cost renewable electricity, photosynthetic biomass availability, waste treatment obligations, and the need to minimize environmental impacts associated with fossil fuels and chemicals. Reductive electrochemistry performed on biomass-derived feeds superimposes electricity and biomass to make electrobiofuels capable of delivering more energy in liquid form than biomass alone. Electrobiofuel processes are critical technologies for future energy storage, as they can be designed to buffer grid intermittency from wind and solar power. Electrosynthesis of chemicals alongside fuels will increase profitability, as material precursors, solvents, and high value molecules are made electrochemically or electrocatalytically by either the anode or cathode. Electrochemical approaches are interesting alternatives for upgrading energy feedstocks or waste biomass to reduce environmental impacts and create valuable products. The growing nexus between electrochemistry and biomass suggests future opportunities for fueling transportation fleets, storing electrical energy in liquid fuels, making chemicals, and treating wastes are foreseeable and timely. We encourage abstracts to be submitted on all topics related to the electrochemical conversion of biomass.
