Short Course Spotlight: Nanobiosensors

ECS will be offering five short courses at the 229th ECS Meeting this year in San Diego.

What are short courses? Taught by academic and industry experts in intimate learning settings, short courses offer students and professionals alike the opportunity to greatly expand their knowledge and technical expertise.

Short Course #5: Nanobiosensors

Raluca-Ioana Stefan-van Staden, Instructor

This course is intended for chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and engineers with an interest in applying electrochemical sensors on fields like biomedical analysis, pharmaceutical analysis, and food analysis. Also, this course can help understand the manufacturers of new electrochemical tools to explore better the response characteristics of nanobiosensors, and to connect in the best way their sensitivity with the sensitivity of the instrument. The course is best suited for an attendee who has basic knowledge of electrochemistry. The attendee will develop a basic understanding of the principles of molecular recognition, design, response characteristics, a new class of stochastic nanobiosensors, and various applications and features of nanobiosensors.

The topics to be covered include:

Raluca-Ioana-Van-Staden – Principles of molecular recognition of nanobiosensors,
– Types of nanobiosensors: potentiometric, amperometric, enantioselective, stochastic, multimode; general aspects,
– Mechanism of producing of the electrochemical signal for each class of nanobiosensors,
– Design of nanobiosensors,
– Response characteristics of different types of nanobiosensors,
– Applications of nanobiosensors,
– Features of nanobiosensors.

About the instructor

Prof Dr habil Raluca-Ioana is a Senior Researcher and Head of the Laboratory of Electrochemistry and PATLAB Bucharest, National Institute of Research for Electrochemistry and Condensed Matter, Romania, and Professor at the University Politehnica, Bucharest, Romania. The author and co-author of more than 235 articles in ISI journals (some of them being highlighted on journals’ covers) especially in the fields of electrochemical sensors, process technology and flow systems, of three book: “Quality and reliability in analytical chemistry” (CRC Press), “Electrochemical Sensors in Bioanalysis” (Marcel Dekker, Inc) and “Laboratory Auditing for Quality and Regulatory Compliance” (Taylor and Francis) as well as of numerous chapters in books most of them related to sensors technology, she serves on the Editorial Boards of numerous journals, e.g., Preparative Biochemistry and Biotechnology (Marcel Dekker, Inc.), Sensors and Transducers Journal.

Lately, she developed new types of sensors for early detection of cancer, for fast screening of citokines, adipokines, and seven neurotransmitters, and for the analysis of different substances of clinical interest in children’s saliva. Raluca was invited for lectures in Romania (Bucharest, Jassy, Cluj-Napoca), Belgium (Antwerpen), Austria (Vienna), Israel (Jerusalem), South Africa (Pretoria, Johannesburg), USA (New Orleans, Boston, San Francisco, UC at Berkeley) and Australia (Perth) and she has more than 400 presentations at international conferences and symposium in Europe, North and South America and Africa. She is holding an h-index of 26 with more than 2500 citations, and gave numerous short courses on the invitation of professional societies. Raluca was awarded with more than 40 national and international awards, e.g., Wilhelm Simon Award (1997), Raikes Medal from South African Institute of Chemistry (2001), President Award from NRF, South Africa (2001), Best Women Inventor Award – from World Intellectual Property Organization, awarded at the International Invention Fair, Geneva 2010.

A member of the American Chemical Society (Chair of the Romanian Chapter of ACS), Division of Analytical Chemistry of EUCHEMs, Society of Electrochemistry (USA), International Society of Electrochemistry and International Society of Bioelectrochemistry, and fellow of IUPAC she received the B.Sc. degree (1992) and the Ph.D. degree (1997) in chemistry from the University of Bucharest, Romania, the B.Sc. degree (1996) in piano and musical education and the M.Sc. degree (1997) in musical composition from the National University of Music, Bucharest, Romania.
