ECS paywall is down October 21-27, 2024

In celebration of International Open Access Week, The Electrochemical Society (ECS) is pleased to announce that from October 21-27, 2024, we will remove the paywall from all our subscription content. This special initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to making the latest advances in electrochemical and solid state science accessible to researchers, educators, and professionals around the world.

Open Access Week 2024

International Open Access Week is a global event that promotes unrestricted access to research and scholarly work, fostering a more equitable system of knowledge sharing. This year’s theme, “Community Over Commercialization,” emphasizes the importance of prioritizing open access initiatives that serve the broader scientific community and contribute to the collective progress of knowledge. At ECS, we believe that providing free access to our peer-reviewed journals during this week aligns perfectly with this mission.

From October 23-29, 2023, The Electrochemical Society (ECS) removes the paywall to the ECS Digital Library, providing world-wide access to all its published content.

As stewards of scientific advancement and one of the world’s oldest technical societies, ECS continues to encourage research, discussion, critical assessment, and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of electrochemistry, solid state science and technology, and allied subjects. By delivering unrestricted availability of science through open access, ECS can better realize its vision to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation and lead the community as the advocate, guardian, and facilitator of our technical domain.

ECS is set to participate in its sixth International Open Access Week, an annual event organized by SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition. From October 19-26, ECS takes down the paywall to the entire ECS Digital Library on IOPscience, making over 160,000 scientific articles and abstracts free and accessible to everyone.

This year’s theme, “Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion,” supports ECS’s long-term vision to Free the Science by providing access to all in order to further advance research. ECS publications showcase research that directly addresses the sustainability of the planet. Electrochemistry and solid state science continue to hold the keys to innovation in renewable energy, biomedical applications, water and sanitation, communications, transportation, technology, infrastructure, and beyond.

ECS is set to participate in its fifth International Open Access Week, an annual event organized by SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition. From October 21-27, ECS will take down the paywall to the entire ECS Digital Library, making over 151,000 scientific articles and abstracts free and accessible to everyone. (more…)

Free download of over 141,000 articles and abstracts.

ECS is celebrating International Open Access Week by giving the world a preview of what complete open access to peer-reviewed scientific research will look like. This year’s theme is “Designing Equitable Foundations for Open Knowledge.” ECS is taking down the paywall October 22-28 from the entire ECS Digital Library, making over 141,000 scientific articles and abstracts free and accessible to everyone.

This is the fourth consecutive year ECS will take down its paywalls during Open Access Week, an annual event organized by SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition. Eliminating the paywall during Open Access Week allows ECS to give the world a preview of the potential of its Free the Science initiative.

Free the Science is ECS’s move toward a future that embraces open science to further advance research in our field. This is a long-term vision for transformative change in the traditional models of communicating scholarly research. ECS last opened its digital library in April 2018 for the second Free the Science Week.

“ECS is working to disseminate scientific research to the broadest possible audience without barriers,” says Mary Yess, ECS chief content officer/publisher. “Through Open Access Week, we’re able to once again highlight a new scholarly publishing model that promotes authors and the science they do.”

ECS is once again participating in International Open Access Week. It begins on Monday, October 23 and for the week you’ll be able to read and download anything in the ECS Digital Library at no charge. That’s over 132,000 articles and abstracts.

ECS proud to participate in Open Access Week as part of its commitment to Free the Science, an initiative to move toward a future that embraces open science to further advance research in our fields. This is a long-term vision for transformative change in the traditional models of communicating scholarly research. Being open means better collaboration, more impact, and faster progress.

Let your friends and colleagues know what ECS is doing so they too can take advantage of our free research! Discover information in fields like energy technology, communications, transportation, human health and welfare, and the general sustainability of our planet.

Ask Us Anything!

r/scienceECS Technical Editor Dr. Gerald Frankel, accompanied by ECS’s Executive Director Roque Calvo, hosted our first ever “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) on Reddit’s r/science. The event gathered over 2,000 upvotes and more than 100 comments. We did this in honor of Open Access Week 2016 (Oct. 24-30), as a means of having an open dialogue regarding Free the Science, ECS’s effort to keep money in scientific research rather than in the publishing industry.

For about an hour Frankel and Calvo fielded questions on topics ranging from Open Access and the staggering cost of APCs, to failed Youtube experiments and electric car batteries.

You can read the whole thing on Reddit, or check out an archived version on The Winnower.

And don’t forget, the 132,000 articles and abstracts in the ECS Digital Library will be available free of charge Oct. 24-30.
