The newly formed ECS Pacific Northwest Section is happy to announce that Dr. Wei Wang, Director of the Energy Storage Materials Initiative at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, is the first recipient of the section’s Electrochemistry Research Award Sponsored by Gamry Instruments.
The award was established to recognize excellence in electrochemistry and solid state science and technology research by an independent scientist or engineer working in Washington, Oregon or Idaho.
Wei Wang
Dr. Wei Wang is Director of the Energy Storage Materials Initiative, a multi-million-dollar, multi-year project at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to fundamentally transform energy material discovery and development through a combined experiment/modeling/data approach. He also serves as the chief scientist and technical lead on stationary energy storage research at PNNL, with a primary focus on developing advanced redox flow battery technologies.
Dr. Wang has published in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society, Science, Nature Energy, Nature Review Materials, and other publications. In 2018, he was included in Clarivate’s 1% Highly Cited Researchers. Dr. Wang has received multiple awards including the U.S. EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Award; FLC Excellence in Technology Transfer Award; and R&D 100 Award. A Battelle Distinguished Inventor, he has more than 20 patents and multiple patent licenses. Dr. Wang co-founded the International Coalition for Energy Storage (ICESI) and actively serves in energy storage-related professional societies, including the ECS Battery and Energy Technology Divisions.

The award was created to recognize and honor excellence in electrochemistry and solid state science and technology research as evidenced by the quality of the candidate’s publications and/or technical contributions. Candidates are nominated and must be ECS members.
ECS Pacific Northwest Section
The ECS Board of Directors chartered the ECS Pacific Northwest Section on October 16, 2020. The section’s goal is to connect interested parties from academia, industry, and government; bridge a scientific gap; provide networking opportunities that could lead to new developments; and help members advance their careers. The section serves all the universities and national labs in Washington State, Idaho, and Oregon.
ECS Sections
ECS Sections introduce and support activities in electrochemistry and solid state science within specific regions. They provide networking opportunities for those new to the field or advanced in their careers; bring technical news and activities within reach of those unable to attend ECS meetings; participate in ECS affairs and increase ECS membership; and create awareness for the science.
