Abstract

To enable societal decarbonization, a variety of energy storage technologies that meet the application requirements in terms of safety, cost, energy density, performance reliability and sustainability, are needed. Since commercially available battery technologies are not capable of meeting these demands, global research efforts have focused increasingly on a variety of alternative battery chemistries, including those utilizing high capacity metal anodes, sustainable cathodes, and solid state electrolytes. This presentation showcases our research efforts in these areas, highlights the recent advancements made, and offers our future perspectives.

Rana Mohtadi

Dr. Rana Mohtadi is a Senior Principal Scientist in the Materials Research Department at Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA). She has been in the decarbonization R&D field for over two decades, spearheading and leading research, and contributing important advancements in the creation, design, and demonstration of transformative materials for chemical and electrochemical energy storage technologies, including the research of novel battery electrolyte chemistries for liquid and solid state batteries. Dr. Mohtadi has published influential research and was awarded over 30 patents. She is the elected Chair of the 2025 Metal-Hydrogen Systems Gordon Research Conference. In 2015, Dr. Mohtadi was recognized and showcased in the “We Run on Brain Power” initiative by the governor as a face of cutting edge innovation in the state of Michigan. Notable recognitions include in 2014, being named to the “40 under 40” by Automotive News and Crain’s Detroit Business and receiving the 2011 R&D100 award. Dr. Mohtadi acts as a Principal Investigator at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University in Japan (Researcher | AIMR (tohoku.ac.jp).
