Visa & Travel Info

Depending on your country of citizenship, certain entry requirements must be met to travel to the United States for business or conference attendance. While some travelers only need a valid passport, many international attendees require a visa to enter the US.

MEETING LOCATION

Seattle Convention Center (SCC) ARCH
705 Pike Street
Seattle, WA 98101

Do I need a US visa?

US immigration law defines the type of visa required based on the purpose of travel. Unless you qualify under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), most ECS meeting attendees need a U.S. Visitor Visa (B‑1) for temporary business visits, including attending scientific meetings and conferences.

Visit the U.S. Department of State website for up‑to‑date visa application procedures, documentation requirements, fees, and consulate locations.

Visa Waiver Program (VWP) & Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)

Citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program do not require visas for short visits to the US for temporary business. Travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Program requires ESTA approval.

ECS Letter of Invitation

If your visa application requires a formal conference invitation, you may request an official ECS Letter of Invitation confirming your intent to attend the 249th ECS Meeting.

Applying for a U.S. Visitor Visa (B‑1)
  • Apply early—at least three to four months before your planned travel date!
  • Complete the application fully and accurately.
  • Provide evidence of your intention to return to your country of residence, and/or binding or sufficient ties to your home country or permanent residence abroad.
  • Provide proof of your professional scientific and/or educational status, ECS membership, and meeting registration.
  • If the application center requires an in-person interview, dress professionally and be prepared to clearly and concisely describe your intentions.
  • Visit the U.S. Department of State visa appointment and wait time page to check current processing timelines and schedule your interview.
