Understanding visas and eTAs
Depending on where you live, certain entry requirements must be met to visit Canada. While some travelers need only a valid passport, most require a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
Visit Canada has detailed information on traveling to Canada including eTAs, visas, and documents required to enter the country.
US citizens need only a passport—not an eTA—to enter Canada.
Visa-exempt foreign nationals are required to have an eTA. While most eTA applications are approved within minutes, it is recommended to apply a few weeks before scheduled travel in case additional documents are required.
A visitor visa (also called a temporary resident visa) is an official document showing that you meet the requirements needed to enter Canada.
When applying for a visa
- Apply early—at least three months before your planned travel date.
- Complete the application fully and accurately.
- Provide evidence of your intention to return to your country of residence, and/or binding or sufficient ties to your home country or permanent residence abroad.
- Provide proof of your professional scientific and/or educational status, ECS membership, and meeting registration.
- Dress professionally and be prepared to clearly and concisely describe your intentions should the application center require an in-person interview.
ECS Letter of Invitation
If your visa application requires a formal conference invitation, you may request an official ECS Letter of Invitation confirming your intent to attend the 250th ECS Meeting.
