The Electrochemical Society is pleased to announce that in lieu of IMLB 2020, the IMLB organizing committee has decided to publish papers of invited speakers to the 20th International Meeting on Lithium Batteries in a focus issue of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) dedicated to this meeting.
IMLB 2020 is the premier international conference on the state of lithium battery science and technology, as well as current and future related battery systems for application in transportation, industry, grid storage, aviation, aerospace, biomedical, and other promising sectors. Planned to convene in Berlin, Germany, the conference was expected to draw more than 1,000 experts, researchers, and company representatives. (more…)

Focus Issue on Characterization of Corrosion Processes in Honor of Philippe Marcus
The Journal of The Electrochemical Society will publish a focus issue in connection with the fifth symposium on High Resolution Characterization of Corrosion Processes: In Honor of Philippe Marcus taking place during PRiME 2020.
Characterization techniques are being applied in novel and innovative ways, often in situ during corrosion studies, to obtain new information about corroding systems. This focus issue highlights exciting applications of techniques that are highly resolved in space and/or time and used to elucidate kinetics and mechanisms of underlying electrochemical reactions. The Society recently made changes to the sensors topical interest area (TIA). Submissions to the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology (JSS) are now accepted along with the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES).
“With the rapid growth experienced by the sensor community, and the gradual blurring of boundaries between solid state and electrochemical sensing strategies, it makes eminent sense to have a single TIA for this topic for both journals,” said Krishnan Rajeshwar, JSS Editor-in-Chief, and Robert Savinell, JES Editor-in-Chief. IOP Publishing (IOPP) and The Electrochemical Society’s partnership is setting records!
IOPP recently celebrated its millionth article, reached in part, due to ECS’s publishing partnership with IOPP which went into effect this year. The Electrochemical Society honors 2019 Nobel Chemistry Prize laureates, John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham, and Akira Yoshino, by the launch of a new collection highlighting their scientific contributions published by ECS. In addition, ECS recognizes their contributions in the winter 2019 issue of Interface, now available online.
Goodenough, Whittingham, and Yoshino have been deeply involved with The Electrochemical Society—as members, authors, editors, fellows, meeting participants and organizers, awardees, and more. Their publications with ECS, to varying degrees, trace the history of the development of the Lithium-ion battery, the revolutionary invention for which they shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In “Approaches for the Electrochemical Interrogation of DNA-Based Sensors: A Critical Review,” Miguel Aller Pellitero, Alexander Shaver, and Netzahualcóyotl (Netz) Arroyo-Currás reviewed the specific advantages of the electroanalytical methods most commonly used for the interrogation of DNA-based sensors.
Arroyo-Currás, ECS member and associate editor, Journal of the Electrochemical Society sensors technical area, provided more background information to the article in response to questions from the ECS Blog.
These are measurement platforms that employ any form of DNA as the molecular recognition element. We must remember that electrochemistry is extremely sensitive (for example, there is significant work regarding stochastic detection of single entities like molecules, nanoparticles and whole cells and viruses) but lacks specificity; thus, relying on the molecular binding properties of DNA allows us to selectively detect molecules even in complex biological environments.
