The Journal of The Electrochemical Society is publishing a focus issue in connection with the 241st ECS Meeting Nucleation and Growth symposium.

This focus issue aims to capture the latest findings and insights related to phase transformation in electrochemical systems. Contributions for this cross-disciplinary pursuit are sought from researchers with diverse expertise and backgrounds reporting on the latest experimental and computational approaches to understanding nucleation and growth phenomena during electrodeposition and dissolution.

Modern imaging, scattering, and spectroscopy tools along with related methods are enhancing our understanding of phase transformations across a wide range of length scales. In the case of electrodeposition, nucleation and growth play a central role in applications ranging from microelectronics and MEMS to energy conversion and storage systems. This focus issue brings together researchers with diverse expertise and backgrounds to share new experimental and computational approaches to enable progress in the mechanistic understanding of nucleation and growth phenomena. Interest is focused on resolving and explaining the morphological, structural, and compositional evolution of electrode surfaces during electrodeposition. Understanding shape selection, stability criteria, and exploring engineering strategies aimed at specific technological ends are also of interest. (more…)

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a focus issue on IEDMS 2021, the 26th International Electron Devices & Materials Symposium sponsored by The Electronics Devices and Materials Association and National Cheng Kung University, which was held November 18-19, 2021.

The IEDMS conference provides an annual platform for international scientists, engineers, and researchers to present the latest research results, ideas, developments, and applications in electron devices and materials. The themes of this conference cover fields for materials and devices including compound semiconductors, novel materials, nano and 2D materials, Si-based process, photonics, and sensors. Original high-quality papers related to these themes are welcomed, including theories, design, modeling, simulation, reliability, fabrication, integration, and applications in electronic relative fields.

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a focus issue on Emerging Trends in CMP. Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) is a widely accepted global planarization technology that has been deployed by integrated circuit (IC) manufacturers across the globe. It is considered a critical and enabling step in IC manufacturing. A CMP process requires a correct combination of CMP consumables such as slurry, pad, pad conditioner, and cleaning chemistries, along with equipment and end point technology. As device fabrication advances to sub-7 nm nodes, it is critical that advances in CMP can meet future challenges for these advanced CMP processes. A lot of research is being performed in the CMP area. This focus issue is intended to bring high quality research articles to the scientific community.

The Journal of The Electrochemical Society is publishing a focus issue in connection with the 240th ECS Meeting symposium on Electrochemical Separations and Sustainability 4.

Electrochemical separations can recover or harvest value products at high purity and efficiency, as well as contribute technologies for environmental management and cleanup. These innovative processes become extremely meaningful when integrated with sustainable resources and renewable energy. The current focus issue intends to address fundamental topics as well as modern applications of electrochemical separation technologies.  

Electrochemical separations have received renewed attention due to growing challenges in energy, environment, and sustainability.  Now the electrochemical separation has been applied in many important areas including gas purification, critical materials recovery, environmental remediation, desalination, and materials recycling. Therefore, it is great timing to have this focus issue to summarize the progress and provide perspective for the future. This topic covers from fundamental electrochemical principles behind separations, to a range of applications.

Call for Papers

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a special collection of papers being presented at the International Conference on Advanced Materials and Mechanical Characterization (ICAMMC-2021). The meeting takes place December 2-4, 2021 in virtual format. 

ICAMMC 2021 covers a wide range of emerging inter- and multi-disciplinary topics in developing advanced materials and their characterization at multiple length scales, manufacturing, and growth of innovative materials. It is an international forum for sharing knowledge and results in theory, computation, synthesis, fabrication, and characterization of advanced materials in structural, microstructural, small-scale mechanical aspects (not limited to), structure-property correlations, and technological applications. It is a common platform to present and discuss path-breaking research ideas and is expected to be an interface between academia and industry for societal needs. The Journal of The Electrochemical Society is publishing a focus issue dedicated to the late Professor Nongjian Tao for his longstanding contribution to the development of chem/biosensors and nanoscale measurements. This issue also serves as a celebration of the 70th birthday of Professor Stuart Lindsay, Professor Tao’s doctoral advisor and longtime collaborator for over 35 years.

Contributions are invited in all aspects of chem/biosensor technology with topics that include, but are not limited to: Electric, magnetic, and optical biosensors; novel transduction modes; molecular recognition elements; nanomaterials and their system level integration for biological/medical applications such as point-of-care, implantable, and wearable sensors.  In addition, novel nanoscale measurements of cells and cellular/molecular components (e.g., nucleic acid, proteins, organic molecules), including scanning probe microscopy, plasmonic, and optical imaging of biomolecules, are also highly encouraged.  Many of these measurements lead to improved understanding of transduction mechanisms and novel biosensor platforms that allow for ultrasensitive and dynamic detection in living systems. The Journal of The Electrochemical Society is publishing a focus issue on advanced electrolysis for renewable energy storage. The utilization of renewable energy has substantially driven more attention into electrolysis technologies. As renewable energy emerges and penetrates further into the energy market, the storage of surplus “off peak” electricity has received widespread considerations. An electrolyzer (ELX) can utilize “off peak” electricity from solar or wind farms to produce hydrogen or other fuels (e.g., ammonia, methanol, ethylene). These chemicals can subsequently be operated in a fuel cell mode to generate electricity or used as intermediates for other industrial applications. Compared to conventional batteries, the chemical storage of renewable energy has advantages of high energy density, long duration, and more flexibility. The covered technologies can include water electrolysis, CO2 conversion, NH3 synthesis, or other new electrolysis technologies. (more…)

This focus issue of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society is a collection of papers on cutting-edge research by members of the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry (SEAC). SEAC members work in diverse fields of electrochemistry including the fundamental study of the electrochemical interface, nanoelectrochemistry, electrochemical sensors, spectroelectrochemistry, electrochemical imaging, in vivo and in vitro analysis, and energy conversion and storage. The Society, founded in 1984, is dedicated to promoting advances in both basic and applied research in electroanalysis; providing a venue for the exchange of ideas among researchers from academia, industry, and government; and recognizing the achievements and contributions of scientists who work in the field of electroanalytical chemistry. To celebrate and promote the many achievements of women investigating the myriad aspects of electrochemistry, the Journal of The Electrochemical Society is announcing a focus issue on Women in Electrochemistry, to be published in 2022. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) celebrates the achievements of women researchers from all over the world with the aim of reducing gender inequality in STEM.

The issue is open to research papers and communications reporting new research results, methods papers discussing analytical techniques and standards, review papers looking at the history and development of specific fields, and perspectives on the future of certain areas of research. Showcasing the outstanding work of a growing list of eminent and talented female scientists, it pulls together the entire scope of topical interest areas covered by the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. In addition, the issue will be edited by 50 top female scientists from around the world, with their direct input on the peer-review of each submission.

The sole requirement for submission is that a female researcher is the primary author or co-author responsible for the study reported or opinions expressed. Male co-authors are welcome, as the issue aims to celebrate the diversity of our community, in addition to the important advances being made by women in the sciences. (more…)
