Dr. Y. Shirley Meng

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory appointed Y. Shirley Meng to be Chief Scientist at the Argonne Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science (ACCESS) with a joint appointment as a professor at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at The University of Chicago. She assumes the position in January 2022. Dr. Meng joined ECS as a graduate student in 2007 and calls the Society her “professional home.” She is on the Society’s Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the ECS Battery Division. 

“To tackle the climate crisis, sustainable and resilient energy storage is one of the most important technologies humanity needs. I am excited and humbled to take up the role of ACCESS chief scientist. At the same time, as a faculty member of the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, I hope to build an innovation ecosystem where we can train the next generation workforce, foster meaningful relations with industry both domestic and international, and make breakthroughs in energy storage technologies in the decade to come,” said Dr. Meng. For months, Impact Canada has been working hard on narrowing down five finalists to work on the Charging the Future Challenge, a $4.5-million project aimed at accelerating made-in-Canada clean battery innovations with the potential to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The five selected finalists will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas for battery breakthroughs to a jury for a chance to win up to $700,000 each to develop battery prototypes over the course of 18-months, with the winner receiving a $1 million grand prize. Shirley MengOn May 18, the ECS San Francisco Section presented Distinguished Seminar speaker Dr. Shirley Meng via Zoom to present her talk “Li Metal Anode – Advanced Characterization for Next Generation Energy Storage Materials.” The Zoom presentation was a great success, quickly reaching its maximum capacity of 300, and leaving those many participants unable to attend asking how they could later access the content. New, low-cost batteries designed to last for a million miles of use in electric vehicles? Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk says the public can expect just that from the Model 3 sedan, expected to debut in China late this year or early next. 

According to Reuters, the new “million mile” battery—which relies on low-cobalt and cobalt-free battery chemistries, among others—was jointly developed with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL). Reuter’s sources say CATL plan on supplying Tesla with an improved long-life nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery whose cathode is 50% nickel and only 20% cobalt sometime next year. (more…)

Proposal Submission Deadline: January 31, 2020

ECS, in partnership with the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRI-NA), a division of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA), requests proposals from young professors and scholars pursuing innovative electrochemical research in green energy technology for the ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship for Projects in Green Energy Technology.

Today’s automotive industry faces three environmental and energy issue challenges: finding a viable alternative energy source as a replacement for oil; reducing CO2 emissions; and preventing air pollution. While the demand for oil alternatives—i.e., natural gas, electricity, and hydrogen—is expanding, oil remains the main source of automotive fuel. Further research and development of alternative energies can offset alternatives’ drawbacks and bring change. (more…)
