The Electronics and Photonics Division (EPD) Award was established in 1969 to encourage excellence in electronics research and outstanding technical contribution to the field of electronics science. The award recognizes authors who have made noteworthy scientific contributions and enhanced the scientific stature of the Society by the presentation of well-received papers in ECS journals and at Society meetings. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2020 ECS Georgia Section Outstanding Student Achievement Award for a student pursuing a PhD at a university in Georgia.

The ECS Georgia Section Outstanding Student Achievement Award was established in 2011 to recognize academic accomplishments in any area of science or engineering in which electrochemical and/or solid state science and technology is the central consideration.

To qualify for the award, the nominee must be a student pursuing a PhD at a university in Georgia; nominated by a university faculty member; and a member of ECS at the time of the nomination.

Deadline for Nominations:  September 1, 2020

The Energy Technology Division Research Award was established in 1992 to encourage excellence in energy related research and to encourage publication in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. The award recognizes outstanding and original contributions to the science and technology of energy related research areas that include scientific and technological aspects of fossil fuels and alternative energy sources, energy management, and environmental consequences of energy utilization.

Call for Nominations

Nominations are sought for an individual or a small group of individuals (no more than three) who have made an outstanding contribution to the science of semiconductor electrochemistry and photoelectrochemistry, including the underlying areas of physical and materials chemistry of significance to this field.

The ECS Europe Section Heinz Gerischer Award consists of a commemorative plaque and a prize of EUR 2,000. If needed, financial assistance is provided for non-reimbursed travel expenses incurred to receive the award (not to exceed EUR 1,000). (more…)

Endowed by the Dow Chemical Company Foundation to recognize significant advances in industrial electrochemistry, the IE&EE Division New Electrochemical Technology (NET) Award is the only award in the ECS Honors & Awards Program presented to an organization. The award promotes high quality applied electrochemical research and development, and highlights novel electrochemical technology practiced at a commercial scale.

A message from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

In 1933, ten years after winning the Nobel Prize, Neils Bohr lectured on the importance of applying the principles of physics to the field of biology and living organisms. Over the last several decades, the field of biophysics has generated incredible discoveries, from helping scientists understand the structures of molecules inside of a cell, to predicting and replicating the mechanical movements of large mammals.

About the study

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is undertaking a decadal survey of biophysics that will evaluate the current state of the field and identify important future research directions. This study, funded by the National Science Foundation, will serve as a guide for federal agencies and academic leadership as they make decisions regarding biophysics funding, workforce, and research portfolios. ECS is seeking to fill the position of technical editor in fuel cells, electrolyzers, and energy conversion for the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES).

Nominees for this position must possess and maintain scientific knowledge of the scope of the fuel cells, electrolyzers, and energy conversion topical interest area, which covers theoretical and experimental aspects of all types of fuel cells, electrolyzers, photovoltaics, and photoelectrochemistry. Specific topics as relates to energy conversion include design, modeling, testing, and evaluation; novel electrode structures and their characterization, including electrocatalytic materials and electrocatalysis; engineering aspects of fuel, electrochemical fuel synthesis, water, and thermal management. Materials at high temperatures are included.

The technical editor will be appointed for a minimum initial two-year term, renewable for additional terms, up to a maximum of 12 years total service in this role.

Nominees for this position must possess and maintain scientific knowledge of the scope of the electrochemical/electroless deposition topical interest area, which covers deposition of metals, oxides, semiconductors, nanostructures, and composite materials; nanofabrication; fundamental aspects of nucleation and growth; physical and mechanical aspects of deposits, including structure and internal stress; modeling; industrial plating and plating baths; leveling, accelerating, and suppressing agents.

The technical editor will be appointed for a minimum initial two-year term, renewable for additional terms, up to a maximum of 12 years total service in this role.
