Focus Issue on 4D Materials and Systems + Soft Robotics

The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a focus issue in connection with the 4DMS+SoRo: 4D Materials & Systems + Soft Robotics Symposium that took place during PRiME 2020.

This focus issue accepts submissions on all aspects of additive manufacturing (3D and 4D printing) of solid state materials and systems with a focus on soft robotics. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, innovative technologies and materials, materials processing, energy storage, batteries, energy harvesting, power transmission, electronic displays, artificial intelligence, sensors and actuators for soft robotics, etc. (more…)

The Electrochemical Society is pleased to announce that in lieu of IMLB 2020, the IMLB organizing committee has decided to publish papers of invited speakers to the 20th International Meeting on Lithium Batteries in a focus issue of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) dedicated to this meeting.

IMLB 2020 is the premier international conference on the state of lithium battery science and technology, as well as current and future related battery systems for application in transportation, industry, grid storage, aviation, aerospace, biomedical, and other promising sectors. Planned to convene in Berlin, Germany, the conference was expected to draw more than 1,000 experts, researchers, and company representatives. (more…)

Focus Issue on Characterization of Corrosion Processes in Honor of Philippe Marcus

The Journal of The Electrochemical Society will publish a focus issue in connection with the fifth symposium on High Resolution Characterization of Corrosion Processes: In Honor of Philippe Marcus taking place during PRiME 2020.

Characterization techniques are being applied in novel and innovative ways, often in situ during corrosion studies, to obtain new information about corroding systems. This focus issue highlights exciting applications of techniques that are highly resolved in space and/or time and used to elucidate kinetics and mechanisms of underlying electrochemical reactions. The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology will publish a focus issue in connection with the Photovoltaics for the 21st Century 16: New Materials and Processes Symposium taking place during PRiME 2020.

Electrochemical and solid state sciences have major roles to play in removing many of the barriers to terawatt solar photovoltaics. The journal invites submissions in both current and emerging areas of solar photovoltaic research, and covers a whole spectrum of cell technologies from silicon to thin films and emerging technologies. About the focus issue

This focus issue of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society is devoted to the mathematical modeling of electrochemical systems across multiple scales. Advances in electrochemical systems will be greatly influenced by the use of advanced simulation tools for the design and control of materials and processes. The figure below illustrates some of the computational methods that have been developed to deal with phenomena at different time and length scales, ranging from atomic to macro, in order to compute properties and model phenomena. This issue is inspired by the work of Professor Richard Alkire from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, who has been a pioneer in the multiscale modeling of electrochemical systems. In addition, Professor Alkire has led the community in establishing a vision for such work and has trained and influenced countless researchers on this topic over the years. The issue will be dedicated to him in recognition of his contributions to this field. (more…)

About Isamu Akasaki

Isamu Akasaki has devoted much of his research career to the development and advancement of efficient GaN light-emitting diodes via a metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy growth process. This approach led to the discovery of p-type GaN with magnesium doping and ultimately to the invention of the first GaN p-n junction blue/ultraviolet LED in 1989. Subsequent work by Akasaki’s group led to advances in conductivity control of n-type GaN and related alloys by doping with silicon, allowing for the use of hetero structures and quantum wells in the design and fabrication of even more efficient p-n junction structures and the development of wide bandgap III-Nitride semiconductors for solid state lighting and related technologies. These groundbreaking efforts were recognized in 2014 with the Nobel Prize in Physics. (more…)

Focus Issue in Memory of Hugh Isaacs

I found this paper, Real-Time Monitoring of Atmospheric Magnesium Alloy Corrosion, fascinating and truly innovative. Sanna Virtanen describes a method to make sensitive real-time measurements of the atmospheric corrosion of Mg.

This paper is also the first in the new focus issue on advanced experimental methods in memory of Hugh Isaacs. As such, like the other papers that will appear in that issue, it is open access. Note that submissions to this focus issue are still open.

The deadline for submission to the Journal of The Electrochemical Society Focus Issue on The Brain and Electrochemistry has been extended to April 30, 2018.

The focus issue will provide a forum for the discussion of research and developments on how the central and peripheral nervous systems can be viewed and studied in terms of electrical circuits and electrochemical sensors, reactions, and methods.

The issue is dedicated to R. Mark Wightman (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Christian Amatore (Ecole Normale Supérieure), two individuals who devoted their careers to study of these topics, training and influencing countless researchers over the years.
