Jerry Woodall on Science and Technology Careers That Matter

In our series, The ECS Community Adapts and Advances, Jerry Woodall shares insights from his long career working in industry and academia. An inventor and scientist, Jerry is best known for developing the first commercially-viable red LEDs used in automobile brake lights and traffic lights, CD/DVD players, TV remote controls, and computer networks. He received the US National Medal of Technology and Innovation for “his pioneering role in the research and development of compound semiconductor materials and devices.” Currently Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), Jerry served as ECS President from 1990-1991. ECS awarded Jerry the Electronics Division Award (1980), Solid State Science and Technology Award (1985), Edward Goodrich Acheson Award (1998), and named him a Fellow of The Electrochemical Society (1992). Nominations are now being accepted for the 2020 ECS Georgia Section Outstanding Student Achievement Award for a student pursuing a PhD at a university in Georgia.

The ECS Georgia Section Outstanding Student Achievement Award was established in 2011 to recognize academic accomplishments in any area of science or engineering in which electrochemical and/or solid state science and technology is the central consideration.

To qualify for the award, the nominee must be a student pursuing a PhD at a university in Georgia; nominated by a university faculty member; and a member of ECS at the time of the nomination.

Deadline for Nominations:  September 1, 2020

The Energy Technology Division Research Award was established in 1992 to encourage excellence in energy related research and to encourage publication in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. The award recognizes outstanding and original contributions to the science and technology of energy related research areas that include scientific and technological aspects of fossil fuels and alternative energy sources, energy management, and environmental consequences of energy utilization.

Focus Issue on Characterization of Corrosion Processes in Honor of Philippe Marcus

The Journal of The Electrochemical Society will publish a focus issue in connection with the fifth symposium on High Resolution Characterization of Corrosion Processes: In Honor of Philippe Marcus taking place during PRiME 2020.

Characterization techniques are being applied in novel and innovative ways, often in situ during corrosion studies, to obtain new information about corroding systems. This focus issue highlights exciting applications of techniques that are highly resolved in space and/or time and used to elucidate kinetics and mechanisms of underlying electrochemical reactions.
