The Journal of The Electrochemical Society is publishing a focus issue in connection with the Frontiers of Chemical/Molecular Engineering in Electrochemical Energy Technologies 2 symposium being held in honor of Professor Robert Savinell’s 70th Birthday at the 242nd ECS Meeting. 

The focus issue deals and the connected symposium address current and emerging ideas in electrocatalysis, electrolytes, and device design for fuel cells and flow batteries. Topics include molecular-level understanding of small-molecule electrocatalysis (including hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon- and nitrogen-containing molecules such as alcohols, ammonia, urea, carbon dioxide, and others); membranes and electrolytes including additives, nanoparticles, and deep eutectic chemistries; redox-active molecules; and new concepts in fuel cells and flow batteries. Contributions from both theory and experiment are welcome. Studies that connect molecular-level understanding to macroscopic electrochemical technologies are of particular interest. (more…)

Symposium focus: In honor of Robert Savinell’s 70th birthday, after more than four decades of research in fuel cells and flow batteries, this symposium is organized to celebrate his achievements. The symposium highlights current and emerging ideas in electrocatalysis, electrolytes, and device design for fuel cells and flow batteries. Topics include molecular-level understanding of small-molecule electrocatalysis (including hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon- and nitrogen-containing molecules such as alcohols, ammonia, urea, carbon dioxide, and others), membranes and electrolytes including additives, nanoparticles, and deep eutectic chemistries, redox-active molecules, and new concepts in fuel cells and flow batteries, with contributions spanning different length scales from molecules to devices. We welcome contributions from both theory and experiment, especially on studies that are designed to bridge molecular-level understanding of electrochemistry to macroscopic electrochemical technologies. The objective is to provide an interdisciplinary discussion forum on the current state and future perspectives in fuel cells and flow batteries, and to celebrate the achievements of Robert Savinell to the field. Robert F. SavinellLong-time ECS member, editor of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society, and Distinguished University Professor at Case Western Reserve Robert Savinell has a new title to add to his list. Savinell will lead the U.S. Department of Energy’s new Energy Frontier Research Center at Case Western Reserve University, in support of a research endeavor that focuses on identifying new battery chemistries with the potential to provide large, long-lasting energy storage solutions for buildings or the power grid. The project is made possible by an EFRC grant, which awarded $10.75 million to Case Western Reserve University, allowing the school to establish a research center to explore Breakthrough Electrolytes for Energy Storage.

George S. Dively Professor of Electrochemical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University
Professor Savinell is recognized as a leading authority on electrochemical energy storage and conversion. His research has been directed at fundamental science and engineering research for electrochemical systems and novel device design, development, and optimization. Dr. Savinell has over 100 publications and seven patents in the electrochemical field. He is a past chair of ECS’s Electrolytic and Electrochemical Engineering Division, a former editor of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society, and a Fellow of ECS.
