Through the Daniel Cubicciotti Student Award, the ECS San Francisco Section assists a deserving student in Northern California pursue a career in the physical sciences or engineering.  The award, established in 1994, is given annually in honor of spirited researcher and innovator Daniel Cubicciotti. The award winner receives an etched metal plaque and US $2,000. In addition, up to two honorable mentions receive a framed certificate and US $500.

Congratulations to Lisa Housel, recipient of the 2020 ECS Energy Technology Division Graduate Student Award sponsored by BioLogic. The award recognizes and rewards promising young engineers and scientists in fields pertaining to this ECS Energy Technology Division and encourages them to initiate or continue careers in this field.

Lisa M. Housel is a fifth-year PhD candidate in Chemistry at Stony Brook University, U.S., under the mentorship of Drs. Esther S. Takeuchi, Kenneth J. Takeuchi, and Amy C. Marschilok. Housel received her BS in Chemistry and Economics at Muhlenberg College, U.S. Her graduate research aims to understand the impact of charge transport properties on the structural change and electrochemistry of different battery materials. Specifically, synchrotron-based operando methods enabled Housel to probe structural and chemical changes of battery materials during electrochemical reduction and oxidation. Housel’s graduate work resulted in over 20 publications including multiple publications in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. (more…)

Congratulations to Aicheng Chen, the 2020 Canada Section R. C. Jacobsen Award recipient!

Dr. Aicheng Chen is Professor of Chemistry, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Electrochemistry and Nanoscience, and Director of the Electrochemical Technology Centre (ETC) at the University of Guelph, Canada. He received his MSc from Xiamen University, China, under the supervision of Prof. S.-G. Sun, and his PhD from the University of Guelph in 1998 under the direction of Prof. J. Lipkowski. After working in the chemical industry as Research Scientist and Electrochemical Specialist for four years, Chen joined Lakehead University, Canada, as Assistant Professor in 2002. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005, Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in 2006, and Professor in 2010. He received a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Senior Fellowship in 2006 to work with Prof. B. Ohtani at Hokkaido University, Japan. During his 2008 sabbatical, Dr. Chen worked with Prof. R. Compton as a visiting scholar at Oxford University, England. He joined the University of Guelph in 2017. (more…)

Established in 2011, the Georgia Section Outstanding Student Achievement Award recognizes academic accomplishments in any area of science or engineering in which electrochemical and/or solid state science and technology is the central consideration. Congratulations to Keegan Adair, winner of the 2020 ECS Canada Section Student Award.

The Canada Section Student Award is one of four awards in the ECS Canada Section recognition program. Established in 1987, the award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in the field of electrochemical power sources. It is intended to encourage the recipients to initiate or continue careers in the field. The recipient is a student pursuing a PhD at a Canadian university in any area of science or engineering in which electrochemical science and technology and/or solid state science and technology is the central consideration.

This year’s winner, Keegan Adair, received his BSc in chemistry from the University of British Columbia in 2016. He is currently a PhD candidate in Professor Xueliang (Andy) Sun’s Nanomaterials and Energy Group at the University of Western Ontario. Recognition of Adair’s work includes the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and the NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral award. (more…)

The Carl Wagner Memorial Award was established in 1980 to recognize mid-career achievement, excellence in research areas of interest to the Society, and significant contributions in the teaching or guidance of students or colleagues in education, industry, or government.

The award consists of a silver medal and a corresponding wall plaque; $7,500 (USD); complimentary meeting registration for the award recipient and companion; a dinner held in the recipient’s honor during the designated meeting: and Society Life Membership. The next Wagner Award will be recognized at the 239th ECS Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, in October 2021. There the recipient will deliver a general address on a subject related to the contributions for which the award is being presented. (more…)

Saket Bhargava

The ECS Industrial Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering Division Student Achievement Award recognizes and rewards promising young engineers and scientists in fields pertaining to this division. This year’s recipient, Saket Bhargava, is a PhD student in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). His work with Paul Kenis’ research group focuses on using flow electrolyzers to develop system-level process intensification approaches and studying the effects of intensified process conditions on the activity, selectivity, and energy efficiency for CO2 electroreduction to value-added chemicals. His award talk is titled, “System-Level Approaches for Intensifying the CO2 Electrolysis Process.”

The IEEE Division Student Achievement Award was established in 1989. It includes a framed certificate and $1,000 (USD) prize. The annual nomination deadline is September 15. (more…)
