It is with great pride that ECS honors the winners of the General Student Poster Session Awards for the 229th ECS Meeting in San Diego, California. In following with biannual ECS meeting tradition, awards recognized the top two poster presentations in electrochemical and solid state categories.

ECS established the General Student Poster Session Awards in 1993 to acknowledge the eminence of its students’ work. The winners exhibit a profound understanding of their research topic and its relation to fields of interest to ECS.

In order to be eligible for the General Student Poster Session Awards, students must submit their abstracts to the Z01 General Society Student Poster Session symposium and present their posters at the biannual meeting. First and second place winners receive a certificate in addition to a cash award.

Endowed by the Dow Chemical Company Foundation to recognize significant advances in industrial electrochemistry, the IEEE Division New Electrochemical Technology (NET) Award is the only award within the ECS Honors & Awards Program presented to an organization. The purpose of the award is to promote high quality applied electrochemical research and development and is intended to highlight novel electrochemical technology which has been practiced at a commercial scale.

IEEE NET Award consists of a commemorative plaque (for up to 6 key contributors). The Award will be presented at the annual IEEE Division business luncheon and the winners will be asked to present a paper on the technology development during a Division-sponsored symposium. Recipients may receive travel assistance in order to attend the designated meeting. Organizations are encouraged to self-nominate and re-application is allowed.

Dr. Ardemis A. Boghossian

The Roger Taylor Award is a travel grant for students and early career researchers who have achieved up to ten years of postdoctoral experience to attend the 229th meeting of The Electrochemical Society and submit to Symposium B: Carbon Nanostructures and Devices. The Roger Taylor Award is generously funded by the Taylor family as an endowment to the British Carbon Group.

The winner of the 2016 Roger Taylor award is Dr. Ardemis A. Boghossian who is currently an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering (ISIC) of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Dr. Boghossian received her BSE in Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and served as a Postdoc in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology.

Currently, Dr. Boghossian implements an interdisciplinary approach to addressing fundamental challenges and developing novel technologies that exploit the synergy between nanotechnology and synthetic biology. The award consists of a certificate and a £750 prize. Join us at the 229th ECS biannual meeting in San Diego where she will deliver Wrapped Up in Nanotubes: Dynamics of Wrapped Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) within the B Symposia: Carbon Nanostructures and Devices.

Michael Shur will be awarded the 2016 ECS Electronics and Photonics Division Award at the 229th ECS Meeting in San Diego, CA, May 29-June 2, 2016.

Michael Shur has received degrees from St. Petersburg Electrochemical University and the A. F. Ioffe Institute. Currently, he is the Patricia W. and C. Roberts Professor of Solid State Electronics and the Director of the Broadband Center at the Rensselar Polytechnic Institute. Additionally, Shur is the co-founder and vice president of SET, Inc.

Shur is an ECS Fellow and has been named a Fellow of many other scientific societies, including IEEE, OSA, SPIE, IET, APS, WIF, MRS, and AAAS.

His many honors and recognitions include the Tibbetts Award for technology commercialization, IEEE Donald Fink Award, IEEE Kirchmayer Award, Gold Medal of Russian Education Ministry, RPI Research Award, and many more. Shur is also a foreign member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

According to Wikipedia, a teller of an election is “a person who counts the votes in an election, vote, referendum, or poll.” The ECS Tellers of Election recently met to do just that: verify our 2016 Society Elections.

Let’s backtrack a moment where we must first and foremost thank members of ECS for voting this year. Our second thoughts of appreciation go to the wonderful slate of candidates who are not only recognized professionals in their own areas of the sciences, but are dedicated enough to vie for ECS leadership. Thank you very much to Drs. Christina Bock and Thomas Moffat for considering the Vice President opportunity. Four years ago, Dr. Krishnan Rajeshwar was in this race to become an ECS Vice President which allowed him to now be on the ballot for the organization’s President. We extend similar appreciation to Drs. James Fenton and Douglas Hansen for competing for the role of Secretary.

ECS is currently accepting nominations for the following award of the Luminescence and Display Materials Division:

LDM Outstanding Achievement Award was established in 2002 (the Centennial Year of The Electrochemical Society) to encourage excellence in luminescence and display materials research and outstanding technical contributions to the field of luminescence and display materials science. The award consists of a scroll and a $1,000 prize. The recipient is required to attend the designated Society meeting to receive the award and give a lecture to the LDM Division.
