Students around the world are excited to belong to The Electrochemistry Society (ECS)’s global community. The ECS student chapter program continues to add new chapters. At the recent 236th ECS Meeting, the Individual Membership Committee and Board of Directors approved the chartering of six more student chapters. They are Clarkson University (US), University of Pennsylvania (US), University of Waterloo (Canada), Yokohama National University (Japan), Swiss Student Chapter (Switzerland), and Czechoslovak Student Chapter (Czech and Slovak Republics).

The ECS Imperial College London Student Chapter is co-organizing SElectrochem 2019: chance to meet bright young researchers in the electrochemistry field!

On September 19, 2019, young researchers in the field of electrochemistry (including batteries, fuel cells, catalysis, and corrosion) will gather at Imperial College London for a one-day event to share ideas, present work, and form new collaborations. There will be four sessions of oral presentations, poster sessions during lunchtime, and a prize ceremony with a drinks reception at the end of the day.

Talks with a twist! The student chapter is inviting two-minute “quick-fire” presentations with an accompanying poster, giving early career researchers a great way to introduce their work, inspire others, and encourage interest and collaborations. Prizes are lined up for the best presenters, generously supported by our sponsors that include the Royal Society of Chemistry, The Electrochemical Society, the Faraday Institution, Energy Futures Lab, Metrohm, and Alvatek. When ECS President Yue Kuo and ECS Executive Director and CEO Christopher Jannuzzi found themselves in California for the International Battery Association 2019 (IBA 2019) Meeting in San Diego, they knew they had to make one more stop before their trip came to an end. They had heard of an ECS Student Chapter at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) known widely for their active membership, offering a hub for nearly 20 members to gather each week to present research, gather new ideas, and even start new collaborations among different research groups.

“We contacted Ryan Henry DeBlock, the UCLA chapter chair, to schedule the visit,” said Kuo.

“Many of the students participating in this chapter are doing research in batteries and come together to exchange what they’ve learned,” said Kuo of the visit.

Kuo also took the opportunity to inform the students of the many things ECS has to offer as well. (more…)

My name is Andrew Ryan. For the past eight months, I served as a Membership Services Intern at ECS under the direction of Beth Fisher. Though I worked on many different projects throughout my time at ECS, my primary contribution was writing membership related posts for the ECS website’s Redcat Blog. A great deal of the posts written over the course of the past eight months with the byline “ECS Staff” were written by me.

An English major who graduated from The College of New Jersey this past May, I was absolutely honored to have the opportunity to write for a website with such a thriving viewership. It was beyond fulfilling to be able to apply my passion for writing in a professional environment.

But ECS was more to me than a writing outlet. It was more to me than a desk job or a resume line. It was a truly, positively rewarding experience.

Let me tell you why.

Here at ECS we are already preparing for Open Access Week 2016 (October 24-30). This year’s theme is “Open in Action”.

We are taking action with our Free the Science initiative – and we hope you will take action too by sharing your Open Access story with us! We want to know how Open Access is affecting you – what has OA helped you to accomplish? How is OA making a difference to you personally?

Submit your brief essay (200-400 words) for a chance to win a cash prize, and (if applicable) additional funding for your student chapter. These funds could be used to send chapter members to an ECS meeting, other conferences, invite speakers to campus, or to host any number of extra events for your chapter. ECS senior vice president and professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, Krishnan Rajeshwar, recently visited the University of Iowa’s ECS Student Chapter to discuss research, meet with faculty, and deliver a lecture on solid state materials.

Rajeshwar’s research touches areas ranging from the first demonstrated use of ionic liquid electrolytes for electrode stabilization in photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices to novel approaches to the electrosynthesis of binary and ternary semiconductor thin films.

Recently, his studies have addressed the use of solid state chemistry principles to the design of electrodes for energy conversion and solar fuel generation. Rajeshwar applied some of these concepts to his lecture, “In a Solid State Materials Chemistry Wonderland: A 40-Year Odyssey,” which he delivered to the ECS Student Chapter at the University of Iowa.

Throughout his visit, Rajeshwar met with the faculty from the university’s departments of chemistry and engineering, discussed science and current events with student members, and was hosted to dinner by ECS 2nd vice president Johna Leddy.
