Manuel M. Baizer Award

Award Rules

Purpose
The Manuel M. Baizer Award was established in 1992 in memory of Manuel M. Baizer and his many contributions to the field of organic electrochemistry and the Society. The Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding scientific achievements in the electrochemistry of organics and organometallic compounds, carbon-based polymers and biomass, whether fundamental or applied, and including but not limited to synthesis, mechanistic studies, engineering of processes, electrocatalysis, devices such as sensors, pollution control, and separation/recovery. (Specifically excluded are the development of electroanalytical methods and purely physical electrochemistry).

The Award
The Award sponsored by The Electrosynthesis Company, Inc. and Monsanto Company will be known as the "Manuel M. Baizer Award of the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division of The Electrochemical Society." The Award is open to both members and nonmembers of the Society.

The Award will comprise an appropriately worded scroll and the sum of $1000. It shall be presented at the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division business meeting in even-numbered years, provided that the Manuel M. Baizer Award Committee can recommend a suitable recipient who is approved by the Honors and Awards Committee of the Society.

The recipient may receive (if required) some financial assistance toward travel expenses, from the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division in order to attend the Society meeting at which the Award is made. The amount of financial assistance shall be approved by the Executive Committee of the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division. The recipient is required to attend the Society meeting to receive the Award and is required to present an Award lecture. If the recipient cannot be present to receive the Award and present the required lecture, the Executive Committee of the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division will decide if presentation of the Award shall be canceled or postponed.

The Award will be financed by (a) biannual contributions of $2500 from The Electrosynthesis Company, Inc., for up to five such Awards beginning in 1994, (b) a $20,000 endowment provided by Monsanto Company in September 1994 (maintained in The Electrochemical Society custodial fund); (c) royalties from the book, "Electroorganic Synthesis, Festschrift for Manuel M. Baizer" donated by its editors, and (d) contributions from the Division's membership as well as other sources. Income from this Award shall not be used for purposes other than the Award. The Award cannot be given if funds available for the purpose are insufficient. (Insufficient funds for the purpose shall be defined as an amount less than $1,500.)

In the event that the Award is made jointly to no more than two co-recipients, the Award to each of the co-recipients will comprise an appropriately worded scroll and a check for an amount to be decided by the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division Executive Committee, but not to exceed $1,000.00.

The Electrosynthesis Company, Inc. and Monsanto Company's support of the Award shall be acknowledged in a Society publication distributed to all members at the time that nominations for the Award are solicited and at the time the Award winner is announced.

Selection of Award Recipient
Before the spring meeting of the Society in even-numbered years, the Chairman of the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division, with approval of its Executive Committee, shall appoint an Award Committee, consisting of a Chairman and six committee members from the active membership of the Division. The Award Committee shall consist of at least two but no more than three non-academic members selected from industry, government, or other scientific entity. The names of the Award Committee members shall be reported to the Society headquarters at the time of their appointment and shall be announced at the Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division Business Meeting at the May meeting of even-numbered years.

The members of the Award Committee are appointed to serve in the selection of the Award recipient for one Award period; their duties will have been discharged with the approval of the selection by the Society's Honors and Awards Committee. It is suggested that at least one member be re-appointed to the following Award Committee in order to give some degree of continuity to the operation. In the event that an Award recipient is not named by the Award Committee because of lack of a suitable recipient, the Committee may be discharged.

The Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division Award Committee will make their selection of the Award recipient or come to the decision that a suitable recipient cannot be found, and report their findings to the Division Chairman before the beginning of the spring meeting in odd-numbered years. The name of the recipient selected by the Division Award Committee must be presented to the Division Executive Committee, and if approved by them, the name of the recipient must be submitted to the Society headquarters for approval by the Society's Honors and Awards Committee. In the event that the selection of the Award Committee is not approved by either the Division Executive Committee or the Society's Honors and Awards Committee, the matter will be referred back to the Chairman of the Division Award Committee for further action, which may be furnishing additional data on the named recipient, the naming of an alternative, or postponement of the Award to the following period.

Upon the approval of the Award recipient by the Society's Honors and Awards Committee, the Chairman of the Division will notify the recipient and request that the Chairman of the Award Committee prepare wording for the scroll and an appropriate news release to be sent to the Society Office.

In order that ample time may be available for the several committees to consider the Award and to take their necessary action, the following timetable should be followed.
