Carl Hering was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 29, 1860. One hundred and forty-two years later, we returned to his place of birth to celebrate our Centennial thanks, in part, to his generosity.
The first steps in organizing the “American Electrochemical Society” were taken in Dr. Herings’s home in 1902. Together with E. F. Roeber, C. J. Reed, and J. W. Richards, he helped found the Society later that year. He served in all the Society’s principal offices and was continuously on the Society’s Board of Directors until his death on May 10, 1926. In 1906, he was elected President of the Society, and in 1922 was made an Honorary Member. He was a regular attendee at Society meetings, missing only five out of forty-nine held.
Carl Hering’s support of ECS did not end with his passing. According to an excerpt from the Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society, Vol. LIII 1928 (the precursor to today’s Journal of The Electrochemical Society), Dr. Hering named the Society as an heir to his will.
On January 19, 1927, the Secretary received notification from the Provident Trust Company of Philadelphia, that according to the will of Dr. Carl Hering, one of the founders of the Society, the Society is heir to a small fund.
That small fund was actually over $70,000 and the income from the fund was one of the driving forces behind the Society’s Centennial activities. How appropriate then, as the Society looked back on the past century of success, and made plans to make the next century even more successful, that Carl Hering’s Legacy Gift is the lead gift of the new ECS Endowment. Today, the generosity of one of our founders 100 years ago, is still making a huge impact on the Society, and will continue to do so in the future.
That is the power of an investment in the ECS Endowment!
