244th ECS Meeting – It Could be Verse: An Evening of PoetryCall for Poems

Join us for an evening of international poetry at the Society’s fall meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden. The session is a showcase for ECS members’ and attendees’ wide variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Intended to be fun, it will be very informal and amateur in nature!

“It Could be Verse” is a cultural entertainment event. Participants are invited to recite or read a poem, sing, play music or simply listen. Poems can be ancient or modern, well-known works by famous poets, more obscure poems, or personal compositions on any topic, in English or their native tongue, whichever is most comfortable. Poems do not need to be related in any way to science, although science-related poems are welcome. (more…)

Congratulations to Yaocai Bai of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Yuzhang Li of the University of California, Los Angeles, winners of the 2023-2024 ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship for Projects in Green Energy Technology. Through the fellowship, ECS and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRI-NA), a division of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA), will support their innovative electrochemical research in green energy technology. ECS and Toyota share the fellowship’s goal to encourage young professionals and scholars to pursue research into batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen, and future sustainable technologies.

Section’s 2023 Annual Conference

The ECS Pacific Northwest Section is hosting a joint electrochemistry conference with the Oregon Center for Electrochemistry (OCE) from September 21 – 22, 2023, on the University of Oregon (UO) campus in Eugene, OR. The ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology is publishing a focus issue in connection with the 245th ECS Meeting Chemical Mechanical Polishing 17 symposium honoring Professor S .V. Babu, who celebrates his 80th birthday in 2024. This issue presents state of the art and reviews of approaches that will reduce the gap between our understanding of fundamentals and practice of CMP and should help accelerate beneficial changes in related hardware and consumables.

Prof. Babu has played an important role in advancing these domains through extensive research publications and patents, mentorship of 50 PhD students, and collaboration with the industry. He has contributed to various improvements in CMP processes, materials, and equipment for the last three decades. Prof. Babu edited the first focus issue on CMP in 2015 and the first (2016) and second editions (2022) of the book Advances in Chemical Mechanical Planarization. He received lifetime achievement awards from ICPT (International Conference on Planarization/CMP Technology) in Leuven, Belgium, and from Clarkson University, U.S., both in 2018, as well as several awards from IBM and Intel. Prof. Babu was the lead organizer of the International CMP conferences held in Lake Placid, U.S., for 22 years. (more…)

ECS Fellow Professor Yury Gogotsi was inducted into the 2022 Class of National Academy of Inventors Fellows at the NAI Annual Meeting from June 25-27, 2023, in Washington, D.C.

Since 2012, the National Academy of Inventors, a nonprofit organization founded and dedicated to encouraging academic inventors with U.S. patents, has inducted a yearly class of fellows into the organization. “The NAI Fellows Program was established to highlight academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding invention that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society. Election to NAI Fellow status is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.” (From the NAI Fellows Program website.)

With more than 190 patent applications filed and more than 70 issued patents, over 30 of which have been licensed to industry, Prof. Gogotsi is certainly worthy of this esteemed accolade. He thanks his nominators, co-inventors, and companies that acquired licenses for using his patented carbon and MXene materials and technologies for their support in reaching this honor. (more…)
