ECS Honors & Awards First Quarter 2023 Deadlines

After two years of digital ECS meetings, we returned to in-person meetings in 2022. We especially enjoyed recognizing award recipients in person, including some of our 2020 and 2021 winners.

In 2023, recognize your colleagues’, students’, and fellow researchers’ outstanding achievements and contributions to electrochemistry and solid state science, and exceptional service to the Society, by nominating them for ECS awards!

Please note the following upcoming deadlines and submit applications as soon as possible.

Society Awards

Fellow of The Electrochemical Society
Advanced individual technological contributions in the field of electrochemical and solid state science and technology, and active ECS membership, are recognized by the Fellow designation. The award consists of a framed certificate and ECS Fellow lapel pin.
Nomination deadline: February 1, 2023


Fellowships and Travel Grants

ECS Summer Fellowships
The ECS Summer Fellowships support student members during the months of June through September pursuing research in a field of interest to the Society. Each year, up to four are awarded: the Edward G. Weston Fellowship, Joseph W. Richards Fellowship, F. M. Becket Fellowship, and the H. H. Uhlig Fellowship. Each fellowship provides USD $5,000 to support recipients’ research, and publication in the award year of a summary report in the Interface winter issue.
Application deadline: January 15, 2023

Colin Garfield Fink Summer Fellowship
The fellowship assists a postdoctoral scientist/researcher pursue research during the months of June through September in a field of interest to the Society. The award consists of USD $5,000 in funding and publication within the award year of a summary report in the Interface winter issue.

ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship
The ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship is a partnership with the Toyota Research Institute of North America to encourage young professionals and scholars to pursue research in batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen, and future sustainable technologies. The award is a restricted grant of no less than USD $50,000 to conduct within one year the research outlined in the proposal, and a complimentary one-year ECS membership.

243rd ECS Meeting with SOFC XVIII Biannual Meeting Travel Grants  
ECS divisions and sections award Biannual Meeting Travel Grants to undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and young professionals and faculty presenting papers at Society biannual meetings—in this case, the 243rd ECS Meeting with SOFC-XVIII in Boston, MA, US, from May 28-June 2, 2023. The awards provide financial support ranging from travel expenses to complimentary meeting registrations, luncheon/reception tickets,  and more. Each division and section has its own application requirements.

Division Awards

Battery Division Early Career Award Sponsored by Neware Technology Limited
The award encourages excellence among early career professionals in battery and fuel cell research by recognizing and supporting the development of talent and future leaders among early career professionals in battery and fuel cell science and technology. It consists of a framed certificate; USD $2,000; complimentary meeting registration; and up to USD $2,000 in travel expenses.
Nomination deadline: March 15, 2023.

Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award Sponsored by MTI Corporation and the Jiang Family Foundation 
The award recognizes and supports the development of talent and future leaders in battery and fuel cell science and technology among postdoctoral researchers affiliated with the ECS Battery Division. It consists of a framed certificate; USD $2,000; and complimentary meeting registration.
Nomination deadline: March 15, 2023   

Battery Division Research Award
The award, which encourages excellence in battery and fuel cell research and publication in ECS journals, seeks to develop interest in battery and fuel cell science among younger electrochemists. The award consists of a framed certificate; USD $2,000; and ECS Battery Division membership for as long as the recipient maintains Society membership.

Battery Division Student Research Award Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Research & Development
This award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in the field of electrochemical power sources, and encourages recipients to initiate or continue careers in the field. The award consists of a framed certificate; USD $1,000; complimentary student meeting registration; and up to USD $1,000 in travel expenses.
Nomination deadline: March 15, 2023

Battery Division Technology Award
The award encourages the development of battery and fuel cell technology, and recognizes significant achievements in this area. The award consists of a framed certificate; USD $2,000; and ECS Battery Division membership for as long as the recipient maintains Society membership.

High-Temperature Energy, Materials, & Processes Division J. B. Wagner, Jr. Young Investigator Award
The Wagner Award recognizes a young Society member demonstrating exceptional promise for a successful career in science and/or technology in the field of high-temperature energy, materials, and processes. The award consists of a framed certificate; USD $1,000; travel expenses; and complimentary meeting registration.

Organic and Biological Electrochemistry Division Manuel M. Baizer Award
The Baizer Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding scientific achievements in the electrochemistry of organics and organometallic compounds, carbon-based polymers and biomass, whether fundamental or applied, and including but not limited to synthesis, mechanistic studies, engineering of processes, electrocatalysis, devices such as sensors, pollution control, and separation/recovery. (Specifically excluded are the development of electroanalytical methods and purely physical electrochemistry.) The award consists of a scroll and USD $1,000 prize.

Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry Division Max Bredig Award in Molten Salt and Ionic Liquid Chemistry
The Bredig Award recognizes excellence in the field to stimulate high quality ECS publications. The awardee receives a framed certificate and USD $1,500. The award coincides with the International Symposium on Molten Salts and Ionic Liquids.
Nomination deadline: March 1, 2023.

Sensor Division Early Career Award
The award recognizes promising early career engineers’ and scientists’ research contributions to the field of sensors, and encourages recipients to continue careers in the field and remain active in the ECS Sensor Division. The award consists of a framed certificate; USD $500; complimentary meeting registration; and ECSSensor Division Sensor Division Business Luncheon ticket.

Sensor Division Outstanding Achievement Award
This ECS Sensor Division award recognizes outstanding achievement in service to the sensor community and research and/or technical contributions to the field of sensors, and encourages work excellence in the field. The award consists of a framed certificate; USD $1,000; complimentary meeting registration; and ECS Sensor Division Business Luncheon ticket.

Section Awards

Europe Section Heinz Gerischer Award
The Gerischer Award recognizes an individual or a small group of individuals (no more than three) who have made an outstanding contribution to the science of semiconductor electrochemistry and photoelectrochemistry including the underlying areas of physical and materials chemistry of significance to this field. The award consists of a scroll and EUR €2000 prize.

Student Awards

Battery Division Student Research Award Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Research & Development
This ECS Battery Division award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in the field of electrochemical power sources, and encourages recipients to initiate or continue careers in the field. The award consists of a framed certificate; USD $1,000; complimentary student meeting registration; and travel expenses up to USD $1,000.

Canada Section Student Award
The award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in Canada in the field of electrochemical power sources, and encourages recipients to initiate or continue careers in the field. The award consists of a USD $1,500 prize.

Pacific Northwest Section Electrochemistry Student Award
This award recognizes promising young engineers and scientists in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho pursuing PhDs in the field of electrochemical engineering and applied electrochemistry, and encourages recipients to continue careers in electrochemical engineering or applied electrochemistry. The award consists of a USD $1,000 prize.
Nomination deadline: February 28, 2023

San Francisco Section Daniel Cubicciotti Award
This award, which assists a deserving student in Northern California pursue a career in the physical sciences or engineering, consists of an etched metal plaque and USD $2,000. Two honorable mentions, each consisting of a framed certificate and USD $500, are also presented.

Sensor Division Student Research Award
This award recognizes promising students for conducting outstanding research in the field of sensors during their graduate training, and encourages recipients to continue careers in the field and remain active in the ECS Sensor Division. Awardees receive a framed certificate; USD $200; complimentary meeting registration; and an ECS Sensor Division Business Luncheon ticket.
