John W. Weidner of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Cincinnati received the 2019 Carl Wagner Memorial Award at the 236th Electrochemical Society (ECS) Meeting. The award recognizes mid-career achievement, excellence in research areas of interest of the Society, and significant contributions in the teaching or guidance of students or colleagues in education, industry, or government.

Weidner delivers “Mathematical Modeling of Electrochemical Systems” on Tuesday, 15 October, at 1140-1200 in Room 311.

John W. Weidner is an ECS Fellow and dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Cincinnati. The new deadline is October 8, 2019.

The Electrochemical Society Nanocarbons Division established the Award in 2018 to encourage excellence in nanocarbons research. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the understanding and applications of carbon materials.

ECS invites nominations for the Robert C. Haddon Research Award of qualified individuals who have made outstanding achievement in, or scientific contribution to, the science of fullerenes, nanotubes and carbon nanostructures. The award consists of a scroll, a $1,000 prize, and assistance up to $1,500 to facilitate attendance at the award presentation. ECS has 13 electrochemistry and solid state science and technology divisions, each of which has robust awards and travel grant programs. (more…)

David Lockwood

The Electrochemical Society values professional and volunteer achievement in the multi-disciplinary sciences. The ECS awards reflect the professional recognition of peers. At meeting plenary sessions, participants from every symposia come together to recognize award winners—some of the greatest minds in the field—and learn about their latest research.

ECS Fellow David J. Lockwood received the Gordon E. Moore Award for Outstanding Achievement in Solid State Science and Technology at the plenary session of the 235th ECS Meeting. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the fundamental understanding and technological applications of solid state materials, phenomena, and processes. Lockwood is a physicist and researcher emeritus at the National Research Council of Canada. His research centers on the optical properties of low-dimensional materials and focuses on Group IV and III-V semiconductor nanostructures. Lockwood presented “Silicon-Based Photonic Integrated Circuits: The Quest for Compatible Light Sources” at the 235th ECS Meeting Plenary Session. (more…)

The Electrochemical Society presents prestigious awards at its meetings that recognize outstanding scientific achievement and acknowledge exceptional service to the Society. These sessions are a great opportunity to meet peers and learn more about the leading lights of electrochemistry, as well as early-career scientists and doctoral, post-doctoral, and graduate students—the future of our field.

Among the major society awards presented at the 235th ECS Meeting, Héctor D. Abruña received the Allen J. Bard Award in Electrochemical Science. Abruña is recognized internationally as a leader in electrochemistry and analytical chemistry. LUIS MANUEL ALVAREZ CERDA received the prize for the best doctorate poster.

The XXXIV National Congress of the Mexican Society of Electrochemistry (SMEQ) and 12th Meeting of the ECS Mexico Section—held this June in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico—honored Luis Manuel Alvarez Cerda for his work, titled, “Effect of the Polymerization Synthesis Temperature on the Hydrophilic/Hydrophobic Balance in Polyaniline Deposits (PANI) on an Anion Exchange Membrane.”

Each year, SMEQ hosts a poster session which awards prizes by degree (bachelor’s/master’s/doctorate). Alvarez took home the main prize for the best doctorate poster, which includes the opportunity to present at a future ECS biannual meeting.

Luis Manuel Alvarez Cerda, chemist since 2005, received his master’s degree in chemistry in 2007. In 2008, the chemistry company Igcar de México/Produquímicos Industriales hired Luis Alvarez to work in the L&D department where he developed more than 30 new products and more than 50 new raw materials until 2017.

ECS would like to congratulate the 2019 Outstanding Student Chapter winner, the University of Calgary for their dedication and commitment to the advancement of solid state and electrochemical science and technology.

The Outstanding Student Chapter Award was established in 2012 to recognize distinguished student chapters that demonstrate active participation in The Electrochemical Society’s technical activities, establish community and outreach activities in the areas of electrochemical and solid state science and engineering education, and create and maintain a robust membership base.

The University of Calgary has become one of ECS’s most exemplary chapters. The chapter will receive $1,000 for student chapter funding and a recognition plaque as well as recognition in Interface for their hard work. (more…)

Congratulations to Edouard Asselin on winning the 2019 ECS Canada Section Lash Miller Award

The ECS Canada Section has four awards within the recognition program. The Canada Section W. Lash Miller Award was established in 1967 to recognize publications and/or excellence in the field of electrochemical science and technology and/or solid state science and technology. The recipient must have demonstrated independent research in academia, industry or governmental laboratories in the mentioned technical areas. The recipient will be a Canada resident who has obtained his/her last advanced education degree no more than 15 years before the year of the award. (more…)

The S.K. Rangarajan Graduate Student Award was established in 2017 to assist a deserving student in India to pursue a career in disciplines related to electrochemistry and solid state science and technology. The award consists of a certificate, a $500 (US) prize, and a complimentary one-year ECS membership. Each year, the section recognizes the award winner at its acclaimed India School which is a weeklong teaching program in electrochemistry for young researchers. The recipient may be invited to speak at that meeting about his or her work or on another topic of interest to the mentioned field. (more…)
