Show off your work at the 237th ECS Meeting with IMCS 2020. Students and early career professionals can present their research at special symposia.

A04 Student Battery Slam 4: Students present ten-minute flash oral presentations on their battery technology work. Awards are given for the three best talks.

Z01 ECS General Student Poster Session: Students deliver oral or poster-form presentations on their research results in electrochemical and solid-state science and technology. A competition for the best posters and papers is part of the session.

The meeting is in Montréal, Canada from May 10-15, 2020. The deadline to submit abstracts is November 15, 2019.

More efficient, longer-lasting batteries are needed to ensure the future of the electric vehicle market. Thanks to Jeff R. Dahn and his Dalhousie University research team, a “million-mile battery” may soon be a reality. Dahn is Tesla’s battery research partner. In “A Wide Range of Testing Results on an Excellent Lithium-Ion Cell Chemistry to be used as Benchmarks for New Battery Technologies,” Dahn describes a new Li-ion battery cell with a single crystal NMC cathode and an advanced electrolyte. The new battery should power an electric vehicle for one million miles and last at least 20 years in grid energy storage—making Tesla’s electric-powered semi-autonomous driving cars and trucks viable.

Symposium IMCS 03: Electrochemical and Metal Oxide Sensors

Symposium focus: There has been a long history to the development of electrochemical (based on ionic conduction; potentiometric, amperometric, and mixed potential) and metal oxide (based on electronic conduction; conductometric) gas sensors. Their optimization and min-iaturization is a source of continued research. The major focus is to improve selectivity, stability, and reproducibility of the sensor response in addition to novel methods for syn-thesis of metal oxide nano-hetero-structures with unique properties and novel sensing mechanisms, and the characterization of the arrays of metal oxide sensors. All relevant topics on gas sensors and biosensors based on electrochemical principles including am-perometric, potentiometric, mixed potential and conductometric devices for both room temperature and high temperature gas sensing are welcome. The Electrochemical Society values professional and volunteer achievement in the multi-disciplinary sciences. The ECS awards reflect the professional recognition of peers. At meeting plenary sessions, participants from every symposia come together to recognize award winners—some of the greatest minds in the field—and learn about their latest research.

ECS Fellow David J. Lockwood received the Gordon E. Moore Award for Outstanding Achievement in Solid State Science and Technology at the plenary session of the 235th ECS Meeting. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the fundamental understanding and technological applications of solid state materials, phenomena, and processes. Lockwood is a physicist and researcher emeritus at the National Research Council of Canada. His research centers on the optical properties of low-dimensional materials and focuses on Group IV and III-V semiconductor nanostructures. Lockwood presented “Silicon-Based Photonic Integrated Circuits: The Quest for Compatible Light Sources” at the 235th ECS Meeting Plenary Session. (more…)

About the focus issue

This focus issue of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society is devoted to the novel electrolytes, organic materials, and innovative chemistries for batteries. This issue is inspired by the work of Michel Armand, Emeritus Researcher at French CNRS, and presently working at CIC-Energigune in Spain and at Deakin University in Australia. Armand, after ushering the intercalation concept, has led the community with outstanding and inspiring contributions to the field of battery electrochemistry with major industrial applications. Armand’s most important renown findings are solid state polymer electrolytes for Li Metal Polymer batteries now commercialized, new highly conductive salt families like LiTFSI (commercialized) and LiFSI for advanced electrolytes, and carbon-nanopainting of LiFePO4 leading to wide-scale commercialization of this olivine in EV and grid storage batteries.
