for Outstanding Achievement in

Solid State Science and Technology

an Award of The Electrochemical Society

Award Rules

Time of the Award
The award shall be granted no more often than biennially, and it shall be presented at the spring meeting of the Society in odd-numbered years.

Qualifications of the Recipient
The recipient shall be distinguished for contributions to the field of solid state science and technology. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the fundamental understanding and technological applications of solid state materials, phenomena, and processes. The recipient need not be a member of the Society, nor shall there be any restrictions or reservations regarding age, sex, race, citizenship, or place of origin or residence.

Content of the Award
The award shall consist of a silver medal and a plaque that contains a bronze replica thereof, both bearing the recipient's name, and the sum of seven thousand five hundred dollars.

Acceptance of the Award
The recipient shall receive the award in person at the designated meeting of the Society and shall, at that meeting, deliver a general address to the Society on a subject related to the contributions for which the award is being presented. The time and location of the address shall be determined by the President of the Society. Expenses involved in the acceptance of the award shall be assumed by the recipient. Exceptions to any of the requirements of this section shall require the approval by the Board of Directors of a request for such modifications by the President of the Society.

Selection of the Recipient
The Gordon E. Moore Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Solid State Science and Technology Subcommittee shall be a subcommittee of the Honors and Awards Committee and shall consist of seven voting members of the Society, including both a designated Chairman and, ex officio, the Chairman of the Honors and Awards Committee. The terms of appointed members shall be four years in length and shall commence at the conclusions of the Society meetings preceding those at which the award is normally to be presented, with no more than three members being appointed at each such occasion. At that time, the Chairman of the Honors and Awards Committee shall appoint the Chairman of the subcommittee for a two year term from the membership of the Honors and Awards Committee. In selecting the Chairman, the Chairman of the Honors and Awards Committee shall, as far as possible, rotate the chairmanship among persons whose interests represent the different technical areas covered by the award. The Chairman shall complete the selection of the Award Subcommittee, whose members shall be approved by the members of the Honors and Awards Committee. The combined interests of all the appointed members of the Award Subcommittee shall represent, as equitably as possible, the technical areas covered by the award. Any vacancy on the subcommittee shall be filled for the unexpired term by appointment by the Chairman of the Award Subcommittee with the approval of the Honors and Awards Committee.

Nominations for the Award shall be solicited by the Chairman of the Award Subcommittee by an announcement in a Society publication distributed to all members and in letters to the officers of the Society and to the Chairmen of the Divisions and Sections in the eighteenth month prior to the meeting at which the award is scheduled to be given. Nominations shall be considered closed at the start of the spring meeting of the Society in the year preceding the normal scheduling of the Award, but nominations, once made, shall be considered in effect for two consecutive award periods. Nominations shall be accompanied by suitable supporting material and shall be provided in their entirety to the Chairman of the Award Subcommittee in sextuplicate.

Members of the selection Subcommittee are ineligible to be considered for the Award, but should any member be nominated for the Award, his candidacy shall take effect at the expiration of the term of his membership on the Subcommittee.

The deliberations of the Award Subcommittee shall be carried out as considered appropriate by its Chairman, but the subcommittee shall meet at least once in discussion of the candidates. The subcommittee shall, by the affirmative votes of at least four of its members, determine whether the list of nominees includes any suitably qualified candidates for the Award and from those so qualified shall, also by the affirmative votes of at least four of its members, select one candidate to be recommended to the Honors and Awards Committee as the Award recipient. This recommendation or the determination that no suitably qualified candidate has been nominated shall be presented to the Honors and Awards Committee at or before its meeting prior to the meeting of the Board of Directors at the fall meeting of the Society in the year preceding the normally scheduled presentation of the award.

The recommendation of an award recipient shall be considered by the Honors and Awards Committee at its meeting prior to the meeting of the Board of Directors at the fall meeting of the Society in the year preceding the normally scheduled presentation of the award. On approval by a majority of the Honors and Awards Committee, the recommendation shall be transmitted to the subsequent meeting of the Board of Directors for approval. If the Award Subcommittee has determined that no suitably qualified candidate has been nominated or if a majority of the Honors and Awards Committee does not approve the recommendation of the Award Subcommittee, the Board of Directors shall be so informed. If no recommendation is made by the Honors and Awards Committee or the Board of Directors does not approve their recommendation, the Award for the period under consideration shall not be granted.

On approval of the recommendation for the granting of the award by the Board of Directors, the President of the Society shall inform the intended recipient of this action and shall determine whether the requirements governing acceptance of the award will be met. If exceptions to the requirements are desired, the President shall request their approval by the Board. If a request for exceptions to the requirements governing acceptance is not approved by the Board, the award for the period under consideration shall not be granted.

On agreement by the intended recipient with the requirements governing acceptance or approval of exceptions to them by the Board, the recipient of the Award shall be considered determined. This shall be announced in a Society publication distributed to all members at the earliest opportunity and given appropriate publicity elsewhere.
