Looking back and forward to the 240th ECS Meeting

On June 14, 78 graduate and undergraduate students from around the world received notification that their posters had been chosen for exhibition at the Z01 General Student Poster Session at the 240th ECS Meeting in Orlando, FL, from October 10-14, 2021. The poster session is a forum for students to present research results to ECS meeting attendees including the most active researchers in electrochemistry and solid state science and technology. Students choose to be part of the competition for cash awards recognizing the best poster presentations.

DST DivisionThe ECS Dielectric Science and Technology (DS&T) Division is offering the prestigious Thomas D. Callinan Award in 2022. Nominations are invited and must be received by August 1, 2021.

The award was established to encourage excellence in dielectric investigations, the preparation of high-quality science and technology papers and patents, and publication in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. Outstanding contributions to the field of dielectric science and technology are also recognized.

The winner is recognized at the 241st ECS Meeting in Vancouver, Canada, in spring 2022, where he/she will present a lecture to the DS&T Division. The award consists of a framed certificate and US $1,500 prize. Financial assistance is available to facilitate attending the meeting where the award is presented. Vittorio de Nora AwardNominations are now being accepted

The Vittorio de Nora Award was established in 1971 to recognize distinguished contributions to the field of electrochemical engineering and technology.

The award consists of a gold medal and plaque with a bronze replica, both bearing the recipient’s name; US $7,500; complimentary meeting registration for the award recipient and companion; a dinner held in the recipient’s honor during the designated meeting; and Life Membership in the Society. The award is bestowed at the 241st ECS Meeting from May 29 to June 2, 2022, in Vancouver, Canada. Through the Daniel Cubicciotti Student Award, the ECS San Francisco Section assists a deserving student in Northern California pursue a career in the physical sciences or engineering.  The award, established in 1994, is given annually in honor of spirited researcher and innovator Daniel Cubicciotti. The award winner receives an etched metal plaque and US $2,000. In addition, up to two honorable mentions receive a framed certificate and US $500.

Profs. Isamu Akasaki and Nick Holonyak Jr. honored for development of LED lighting

Pennington, NJ – The Electrochemical Society (ECS) is proud to congratulate the 2021 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering winners, Isamu Akasaki, Shuji Nakamura, Nick Holonyak, Jr., M. George Craford, and Russell Dupuis. The 2021 prize acknowledges their contributions from the initial creation and development of LED lighting its applications. The global impact of ubiquitous LED and solid state lighting has contributed tremendously to reducing energy consumption and addressing climate change. Akasaki, Nakamura, Holonyak, Jr., Craford, and Dupuis have interacted with The Electrochemical Society (ECS) throughout their careers, publishing much of their critical research in Society journals. The deadline for nominations for the J. Bruce Wagner, Jr. Award has been extended to February 1, 2021. The award was established by the ECS High Temperature Materials Division (H-Temp) in 1998 to recognize a young Society member who has demonstrated exceptional promise for a successful career in science and/or technology in the field of high temperature materials. The award consists of a framed certificate and a $1,000 prize.
